While Dolphins officials huddled Thursday to settle on the list of finalists for the vacant head-coaching position, the team is prepared to fend off any advances made against de facto defensive coordinator Dom Capers.
While Saban signed most of his assistants to multiyear deals - offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey is believed to have two years left on his contract - Capers, who was New York Giants coach Tom Coughlin's defensive coordinator with the Jacksonville Jaguars from 1999-2000, signed for just one season.
Capers' contract will expire soon - the date is believed to be Feb. 1 - but the Dolphins will have a two-week window of exclusivity to work on a possible extension. During that time, the Dolphins can refuse to make Capers, who has interviewed for the head-coaching position, available to other teams, and they are expected to do that.
