I think alot of people in here over value draft picks. Yes, you build your team through the draft but sometimes you have to look at where your picking and make an honest assessment on whats best for your football team. I have seen many in here who say they will not budge at all with one of our first round picks for, in theory, a Roy Williams or Fitzgerald. I did some research and here are the selection from the past four seasons from 22-28(at the bottom). You cant tell me you would take any of those players over a Fitzgerald or a Williams. Dwayne Bowe, Luis Casitillo and Steven Jackson are the only three that would draw some attention imo. A healthy Steven Jackson I might pick. One player in four seasons. So, I dont know what the problem is. If a player of that caliber is availble for the 22nd or 28th pick then why not do it. It should be a slam dunk, where do I sign type of deal. People make it sound like John Elway, Jerry Rice, etc etc are around then every season when it turns out alot of the time there are slim pickings. Hmm, a role player or pro bowler?????????? Dont over vaule and over think the whole auora surronding draft picks in the NFL. There important but shouldnt be held on to like gold when young, established, all-pro players are availbe in trade. I just think Detriot and Arizona are idiots if they move either one of these players.

Just a quick comparison between the WRs that were drafted between those selections and Roy Williams over the past two seasons.

Roy Williams
27 games
99 Rec
1504 yards
15.1 YPC
16 TDs

Santonio Holmes
29 games
101 Rec
1766 yards
17.5 YPC
10 TDs

Mark Clayton
32 games
115 Rec
1470 yards
13.5 YPC
5 TDs

Roddy White
32 games
113 Rec
1708 Yards
15.3 YPC
6 TDs

Dwayne Bowe
16 games
70 Rec
995 yards
14.2 YPC
5 TDs

Robert Meachem didnt play in a single game, so I left him off. I also left Fitzgerald off because he's just out of this world, and I would have no problem trading either 1st for him. Statistically speaking, there have been some pretty high quality WRs taken where we pick this year. Bowe had a phenomenal rookie campaign, Holmes has been a big receiving threat for both years he's been in Pitt. Clayton has been productive despite the QB situation in Baltimore, and the same can be said for Roddy White in Atlanta. The difference in contract for Roy Williams and any player we would draft between 22-28 would be HUGE.

I understand where you're coming from, but I would tell you to be careful not to undervalue draft picks. I'd be very surprised if Arizona moved Larry F. for just a first round pick as low as ours is, and you have to question if it really would be worth giving up a first and a third in order to pull him away. Our receiving corps can be upgraded with the addition of a quick guy who can work the slot, a Lavelle Hawkins, or Donnie Avery, or Eddie Royal in the 2nd or 3rd round. It's not necessarily about having as many All-Pros as possible on your team, as it about maximizing your players production. If we first had to give up a 1st and 3rd for Fitzgerald and then we signed him to a huge contract how many fans would be upset if he didn't break 1000 yards? We have a lot of talent on offense and only so many offensive touches per game. I'm not sure we could justify the cost.

Besides do we really need another reason for Garrett not to run the ball? :laugh2:

If cap wise we can afford Fitz, you better believe I'd give up a first & 3rd for him. He's an excellent WR and you better believe he and Romo would have a lot of fun. Also TO is 34 and strongly doubt Glenn makes the team and/or can contribute, so not only to we need a really good #2 WR opposite him, but he can also take over a game if/when TO coverage doesn't allow us to get to him and/or TO gets hurt. A big part of our problem late in this season was TO's injury; don't really believe he was at full strength in playoff game.

We need to add young offensive playmakers in this draft along with a corner. We drafted for depth last year, this draft we need guys who can contribute right away.

Looking at your list, I think it makes as good an argument to hang on to your picks, as it does to trade them. About 80% of the guys listed have been solid contributors and many have been down right great IMHO. The point is, you can't pay top $$$s to bring in every 1st-tier FA out there. You have to get some good players w/ the draft picks that you have and "coach 'em up"...

I wouldnt go undervaluing our draft picks either.

We have the ability to set our team up for the next 4 to 5 years if they come out of this draft successfully.

This is a critical draft. This team is either going to start to fade around romo this year or we will draft well and this team and romo will be setup for success for the next 3-5 years.

If detroit calls and they will take our 2 or our 1st rounder for roy williams yes I would do that, he is too good and young enough that it is worth it. That has nothing to do with over valuing the draft though.

I agree......he would be better then anything we could pick

To me, just the fact that you can miss on a WR is reason enough to go out and make a trade for a player like Williams or Fitzgerald. Add to that, the fact that the development cycle is typically 3 or 4 years and you've got a situation where your paying premium dollars for players who are not immediatly productive. You never know how a player is going to act in the NFL, once he gets some money in his pocket. You can easily draft a guy who may not turn out to be a good fit for your team, but may end up being a good fit for somebody else's team. You spend money on developing a Pro Bowl type WR for another team and never receive fair market value for your investment IMO. I'm all for making a trade for a good young WR who has proven himself in the NFL. To me, that makes all the sense in the world.

Not including 2007, simply because it's way to early to know about those players IMO, here is a list of the 1st Rd WRs taken in the last 3 years.

2006
Santonio Holmes Steelers Ohio State

2005
Braylon Edwards Browns Michigan
Troy Williamson Vikings South Carolina
Mike Williams Lions USC
Matt Jones Jaguars Arkansas
Mark Clayton Ravens Oklahoma
Roddy White Falcons Alabama-Birmingham

2004
Larry Fitzgerald Cardinals Pittsburgh
Roy Williams Lions Texas
Reggie Williams Jaguars Washington
Lee Evans Bills Wisconsin
Michael Clayton Buccaneers Louisiana State
Michael Jenkins Falcons Ohio State
Rashaun Woods 49ers Oklahoma State

2003
Charles Rogers Lions Michigan State
Andre Johnson Texans Miami (FL)
Bryant Johnson Cardinals Penn State
Donte Stallworth Saints Tennessee
Ashley Lelie Broncos Hawaii
Javon Walker Packers Florida State

2001
David Terrell Bears Michigan
Koren Robinson Seahawks North Carolina State
Rod Gardner Commanders Clemson
Santana Moss Jets Miami (FL)
Freddie Mitchell Eagles UCLA
Reggie Wayne Colts Miami (FL)

That's 26 WRs, not including 07. Of those, I'd say 6 or 7 have lived up to there draft status, thus far. maybe another 4 or 5 are what I would consider decent. That's maybe 12 guys out of 26.

All those recievers you named some were picked higher than 22. I just did the 22nd to 28th not higher or lower.

Roddy White stunk up until this season. Remember how many drops that whole core had. They were about to release all of them last season. In addition, he got alot of numbers this season in garabage time.

Holmes, is a nice reciever but cant make it through a season.

Clayton, have you seen the Raven offense the past few seasons. Mason caught 100 balls this year and if he was a pro bowl player it would had shown imo by now.

Bowe, is a nice young reciever.

I would still hands down take Roy W and Fitz over any of them. Stats can be decieving as well sometimes. Just my opinion

I didn't know we were talking about WRs-only. Remember what we gave up for Galloway, how much it hurt this team, how we did not get our "money's worth" for him, but how well he is doing in TB. If we are talking about the AZ WRs, yes they are worth a trade. I'm not so sure about Roy Williams...

You can't point out Holmes injury problems and than in the same breathe say Williams is hands down better....he suffers from the same issues. White drops balls because he has a bunch of practice squad QB's.
You also can't compare this draft to any other over the past five years as this consensus is that this draft is the best and deepest in a very LONG time.

Dallas couldn't project Galloway getting hurt in his first game and Aikman retiring before getting the chance to use Galloway's skills.
If you based every personnel decision on the premise that the player would get hurt you'd never make a move.
There is also no guarantee Dallas would of drafted anyone worth having with those two 1sts. They rarely made intelligent draft moves in the 4 or so years leading up to that.
Just because Seattle got Alexander and Robinson (who didn't really pan out) with those picks doesn't mean Dallas would of picked them.
It was just a gamble. That didn't pay off.
Looks bad in hindsight but it could of easily gone the other way and made Dallas (Jerry) look like geniuses if they had competed for the NFC championship a couple of times with the Aikman/Galloway combo.

I agree this is a deep draft but there isnt a real standout player this year. Basically, teams better do their homework.

Galloway was put on this team when the team got old and was rebuilding. Our team is at the cusp of the Superbowl.

I understand. I am only try to point out that you can definatly miss on 1st round WRs. There is a great deal to be said for trading for a player who has already proven he can be a good player in the NFL, as opposed to taking your chances on prospects.

I don't know that I would agree with this. Heck, I'd say last years WR prospects were better then this years. Last year you had the following.

Johnson
Ginn Jr.
Bowe
Meachem
Davis
Gonzales
Rice
Jarrett
Smith
Jones
Figures
Robinson
Hill
Jones
Walker
Williams
Higgins
Clowney

All pretty highly rated.

In 05, you had probably 10 highly rated WRs come out.

In 04, you had 7 WRs taken in the first round and another 6 taking in rounds 2 and 3.

In 03 you had 12 WRs taken on the first day.

In 02, 14.

In 01, 12.

In 00, 15 taken on the first day.

Seemingly every year, it is said that this is the best and deepest draft in years. For my money, 04 or 01 in recent history. If your talking all time, I'd say it was probably be 96 or maybe 88.

ABQ, I agree with you. If he's proven and still young why not go get them. Recievers are a tricky position to pick of whose going to be good and whose not.

A proven player over a draft pick. There is no contest there.
