Easily, since most cultures have made the same trajectory.

My guess would be the most common cause: war. It's the quickest method to go bankrupt. Plus it's also hard to maintain a culture when another one successfully invades and kills you.

Other common reason: political systems/structures. There were a lot of monarchies around. The possible policy shifts that can occur after a death in the family are large.

I think they've been watching us for a while and so far haven't invaded.

There have been many accounts of people remembering their parents bringing in just out of this world materials and showing it to them, telling them it was from a crashed flying saucer. Then the goverment comes in and confiscates it and threatens them not to talk.

I'd have to agree, personally if I were aliens advanced enough to watch over a whole planet I'd eliminate the occupants and have a whole planet to myself..... We're not that interesting a species to waste a thousand years watching.... :laugh2:
