Doomsday Defense (for one game at least)

I can't believe there wasn't a thread dedicated to the defense, so I made one.

These guys played incredible last night. With Desean Jackson in the lineup Washington has one of the most talented offenses in the league. Not only did they shut them down, they popped them in the mouth and put them on mat bleeding. Then they jumped on top and went to their ground and pound.

Marinelli finally let the boys loose on the line and man-oh-man what a difference. When he came out mixing the stunts and slants with the zone blitzes, I thought Cousins might drop a deuce right there on the field.

They weren't able to get to the quarterback as much in the second half, due to Washington's good adjustments, but you could see Cousins still feeling the pressure and when the back seven had a shot, they put everything into knocking those boys into next week.

I have been down on Rod's scheme while also emploring the team to give him the tools to run it correctly, but if he finds a way to stick with this BEAR/Zone blitz thing he did last night, this defense can take on a whole new identity and with an offense who can move the ball, these guys playing with a lead could be devastating next year.

Game ball to coach Rod. Honorable mention to the human missile, Sean Lee and the human puching bag (around here at least) Barry Church!

When you least expect it.

Honestly, and this is not a call out of a rebuke, I just kept wondering where this was the last ten weeks, or at least since we got Hardy back. This was a completely different unit last night and at least the third time that Marinelli has come out with a difference base formation this season. It may not always work and isn't resulting in turnovers, but this guy is coaching his *** off.

I know it's easy to say now and that it wont work as well every week, but the base formation they played from last night, needs to be their go-to formation the rest of the way. Keep shifting, slanting and stunting those athletic defensive linemen.

It will be interesting to see how it works with a good quick release QB like Rodgers. The coverage looked more dynamic than normal as well. It would have been nice to have this effort and energy in a couple of the close games that we folded in.

Haven't heard anyone else mention Church, but he was huge for us last night.

It didn't work every time, but they dropped Lawrence, Hardy and Irving (from DT!) into zones and a couple times it absolutely confounded Cousins. On one play, Hardy was in the flat and I thought he might be tried as a repeat offender for how he abussed Matt Jones. He absolutely destroyed the guy.

While they deserve their props, they still allowed to opposition to drive down the field to get the tying score in the last couple of minutes.

That has to stop!

Fortunately the Skins left enough time on the clock for use to get the field goal.

Back to earth. What worked against Kurt Cousins may not work against that bad man known as Aaron Rodgers.

Except for a few lapses, the defense has been good enough to win with this year.

We're fifth in total defense, which isn't always a telling stat but says a lot to me with the overall ineptness of our offense without Romo.

Lol

Desean Jackson. Jordan Reed. Pierre Garcon. Matt Jones. Crowder.

Yes, that is one of the best accumulations of talent, particularly at receiver in the league. I didn't say they have the best production, but they certainly have very good talent.

Should have blitzed long ago.

The only issue is Marinelli going prevent and conservative on those third and longs. It's like the man went bi-polar.

You got to have confidence in your talent and let them play. Of course you strategize, but being a coward is not a strategy.

The Eagles flustered Brady all day up-front, forcing him out if the pocket and into bad decisions. It wasn't simply GRONK being out.

Part of that was special teams allowing a return to mid-field..

He has blitzed in other games but backed off later, I appreciate that he still blitzed in the 2nd half even though it didnt work quite as well.I can't imagine Rid blitzing Rodgers though.

I think they'll start against Green Bay with a similar gameplan to how they payed the Patriots. What matters most is how they counteract when/if Green Bay adjusts.

As well as the defense has played, its just mind boggling that they can't generate any turnovers. Cowboys putrid offense needs as many short fields as it can get.
