i think this is more of the real case.

What is up with these players? You have a chance to play for the Dallas Cowboys, your home team, for a couple of million dollars and you're just not sure if you want to play? Am I missing something? Correct me if I'm wrong, but if invested properly, that kind of money can last you a lifetime. I don't care how much money you have or how much you used to make, a couple million dollars for about six months of work (at most) is a no brainer. There is no guaranteeing monetary success after your football career is over, why on earth would you pass that up? And don't tell me we should respect these guys for their "integrity" or because they don't want to leave their families. Because giving up that kind of money is selfish. You can set up your children and make sure they're protected long after you're gone, so don't give me the family B.S. Six months. Your kids aren't going to grow up in that span of time.

If he's invested his money correctly throughout his career, then an extra 2 million isn't necessary. It borders greedy. If he's another idiot spender, then it's a different story.

What is wrong with asking for more money? Isn't that what we all do with our careers?

True, but in most professions, the more experience you have, the more you should be able to command. In the NFL, this only applies for a certain amount of time, because then the player's skills tend to diminish. Now even though his diminished skills might be better than some of the guys we've trotted out, it still doesn't warrant top position money.

True but you have to also take into account other factors like the fact that he seems 100% content staying retired. He is not someone desperate for work so it's going to take more to get him. Also the fact that we have several injuries so his asking price is going to naturally increase if he has a good agent.

Then the Cowboys are playing their cards right, IMO. No matter how desperate things are, from a business perspective, they have to do what's best for their team, because they carry the biggest risk. The biggest unknown in all of this is where his fitness level and skill level is after not playing for almost two years. And unless he does some sort of combine workout video in the next couple weeks, it'll still be an unknown and the biggest risk that the Cowboys face.

This doesn't mean the Cowboys shouldn't go after a veteran guard, but putting all their chips onto Brian Waters is not smart biz.

I don't have a link, so take it as you like, but I've heard that Waters would definitely play for the right price. The Cowboys like the idea of having him as an option if injuries or lack of talent become a significant problem on the OL. They're happy with a healthy OLine of Smith-Leary-Fred-Bern-Free; however, they don't know if they will get/stay healthy. It basically comes down to weighing the chance that Leary and Bernadeau will be healthy vs the cost of signing Waters. If they were certain that Leary/Bern would be healthy, then they wouldn't be interested in Waters. If they knew for certain that one of Leary/Bern would not be healthy, then they would definitely sign Waters.

It seems like it wasn't that long ago that Jerry would get whoever he really wanted, and I know he wants Waters.
