#Cowboys asked starting RT Doug Free to take a pay cut from his $7M salary, sources say. It would free up money to sign RT Eric Winston.

At this point, #Cowboys officials are unsure if Doug Free will take that pay cut. From taking temperatures, it sounds unlikely. We'll see

I think by the end of the week there will be a new RT on the team.

If I was Doug Free and seeing that there are better RT on the market that are having a hard time getting signed right now, I'd take the pay cut if it is being offered.

Pay cut or no job?? Only thing he has going for him is he will still be getting some money because we gave him a bad contract.

Free do you love the game? If so, take the cut or you will be on the streets for a while in my opinion.

I don't think there is any way possible that both Free and Winston are on the team at the same time. If Free takes a pay cut, we most likely let him and Parnell battle it out.

IF we sign Winston, it's to be the starter and that would make Free something akin to on a bull.

he's a loser and a cancer (by his play). tell him to play for 100k or get lost.

Free probably thinks he is miscast as a right tackle anyway. He would be the 4th or 5th right tackle on the market but the first or second left tackle. I'll bet he thinks he has a spot in NOLA or SD if he is cut.

Playing on a one year deal at left tackle is his way back to a $3-5million salary if it is even possible.

This is a formal way to say, "we're cutting you on June 1."

I don't know the cap ramifications, or what his take would be if he were cut outright - but he won't accept it, and he shouldn't. Nobody among us here would accept a pay cut if the boss came up to you and said "hey, looking at your production, we overpaid you - we're going to cut your salary in half."

I'm not saying they shouldn't cut him, but he's not going to gladly accept a pay cut.

It happens alot. If guys don't take paycuts, they are gone.

Free's probably worried less about a pay cut, and more about his likelihood of making a starting roster somewhere. If we're really interested in bringing in Winston, he'd have to beat somebody out. There's likely a third OT spot on a roster somewhere for comparable money that's a safer bet for him in the long haul.

I think this is exactly what he thinks. I believe he needs to be on the left side, just not here. Time for a change in scenery for him.

Question, what would you guys think is acceptable pay cut to keep him as a back up? If Winston wants 3-4 million a year and is graded much much higher then Free, then what is an acceptable offer?

I would say 1-2 million max with his understanding he will have to compete and could be the backup all year.

i agree in the regular world. football is very different though. i hate that the players agreed to a cba that allows such one sided contracts. but it is the current system and free and everyone else has to live with it.
