Why would we ask free to take a pay cut to free up money to sign Winston. Why have both.

I'd guess that this is what the team is probably thinking.

ABQCOWBOY;5044338 said:They signed Parnell to try and develop him. I don't think the team is confident that he can be the backup. At this point, between the two, I'd say that Free is the better fit for Swing Tackle but yeah, I would agree that I think the 3rd tackle would come down to a battle between Parnell and Free in that situation.
Honestly, I'm not real sure we would save much money if we cut Free. I don't really know.
If he takes a straight pay cut, it would free up salary cap space immediately while still allowing them to cut him after June 1st.Tejano15;5044268 said:Ian Rapoport ‏@RapSheet 4m
#Cowboys asked starting RT Doug Free to take a pay cut from his $7M salary, sources say. It would free up money to sign RT Eric Winston.

If I were Free's Agent, I would tell the Cowboys that he will take a pay cut but that immediately after the contract is official, he wants to be released as a "designated" June 1st cut. This would allow the Cowboys immediate cap relief and allow Free to become a Free Agent now instead of waiting until June 1st.
Tejano15;5044351 said:Have you seen that happen? That seems like a win win situation, but won't Free make more from us if he just says cut me post June 1st?

I'm not sure if you are joking or not, that comment was so out of whack.dcboy;5044311 said:i agree in the regular world. football is very different though. i hate that the players agreed to a cba that allows such one sided contracts. but it is the current system and free and everyone else has to live with it.
ABQCOWBOY;5044354 said:They had other OTs listed but I'd guess that Parnell was probably the guy. Now, having said that, I would not say that Parnell would be the shoe in for Swing Tackle if it came down to Free and Parnell. I honestly don't know how that would shake out if they competed head to head. Might come down to salary.
