Why would we ask free to take a pay cut to free up money to sign Winston. Why have both.

Because the Cowboys are probably looking at Free as the Swing Tackle. He can play both R/LT. That makes him valuable as the backyup and his contract is not a total loss.

I'd guess that this is what the team is probably thinking.

Free is a "weakneed Numbskull" who doesn't belong in the league unless he's playing for the Raiders. No need for a pay cut for this looser, just cut him and give him a chuckwagon ride out of Texas for good.

Jerry needs a fresh lobotomy for handing out that contract.

Didn't they sign Parnell to a two year deal last fall. I would think he would be the swing tackle. Don't know that 4 tackles would be on the opening day roster. I guess Free and Parnell could battle it out for the 3rd tackle position.

Is anyone keeping in mind, the dead money, if they cut Free? I don't want Free on the team either, but cutting these players, means at some point Dallas will have to eat dead money.

do what works best in protecting Romo. you just shelled out $55mil for your franchise QB. Protect him now.

They signed Parnell to try and develop him. I don't think the team is confident that he can be the backup. At this point, between the two, I'd say that Free is the better fit for Swing Tackle but yeah, I would agree that I think the 3rd tackle would come down to a battle between Parnell and Free in that situation.

Honestly, I'm not real sure we would save much money if we cut Free. I don't really know.

Parnell was the only backup OT in 2012 and if I recall correctly in 2011 also.

I doubt Free will go for this. Please accept less money and a demotion so we can bring someone in that's better.

Not to mention that he knows that we have to pay him out the same money regardless if he's kept or released and it leaves him little incentive to do anything. We could spread the hit out for two years if he was a June 1st cut, but Winston won't stick around for two months and wait and will likely sign for about $3 million a season somewhere else.

Free's contract is an albatross that is hanging over our necks. All we can do is simply deal with it. It's not Jerry's fault either; it's that Free decided that he would put on a suckfest for us all after cashing in.

#Cowboys asked starting RT Doug Free to take a pay cut from his $7M salary, sources say. It would free up money to sign RT Eric Winston.
If he takes a straight pay cut, it would free up salary cap space immediately while still allowing them to cut him after June 1st.

If I were Free's Agent, I would tell the Cowboys that he will take a pay cut but that immediately after the contract is official, he wants to be released as a "designated" June 1st cut. This would allow the Cowboys immediate cap relief and allow Free to become a Free Agent now instead of waiting until June 1st.

Have you seen that happen? That seems like a win win situation, but won't Free make more from us if he just says cut me post June 1st?

No, I don't know of any examples.

Free makes the same either way. His base salary in paid during the season not now.

They had other OTs listed but I'd guess that Parnell was probably the guy. Now, having said that, I would not say that Parnell would be the shoe in for Swing Tackle if it came down to Free and Parnell. I honestly don't know how that would shake out if they competed head to head. Might come down to salary.

i agree in the regular world. football is very different though. i hate that the players agreed to a cba that allows such one sided contracts. but it is the current system and free and everyone else has to live with it.
I'm not sure if you are joking or not, that comment was so out of whack.

If not a joke, what alternate universe do you live in?

Free got 17 million in guaranteed money. That is whether he performed or not.
That is not remotely like the "real world"...it is FAR, FAR better.

Free is gone. He thinks he has leverage because if he gets released as June 1 cut we don't get any salary cap relief but meanwhile he will not make over a million on another team. Can't wait to see who our rt is come next week....

Have to wait for June 1st to cut him. He'll never make what he's currently making or probably what the cowboys are offering again so if he has any desire to stay on the team he should take a pay cut and free up the cap space needed for his replacement,.. then get cut for being awful at a later date :laugh1:
