I have seen him get taken out by a bull rush. Its his weakness. Those thinking he can get stronger live in a fantasy land. He CAN improve his technique- the question is will that be enough and how fast can he do it.

OGT, all players have a weight training plan. One of the few areas that just about everyone thinks we are very good at is our strength coaches. If there was any way to make Free stronger they would have done it by now.
There's no reason to make him stronger at this point. He is strong enough. He only needs to continue to develop. Keep in mind, the kid is only 25 years old.

But if they did want to focus solely on strength, they could certainly make him stronger.

But he has... thats the thing.

For what he lacks in strength he makes it up with athleticism and ability to position himself between himself and the ball carrier.

He wont get a lot of push once he locks on but he can shield you off.

What some fail to understand is that this is Free's first real extended time in the starting lineup at this level. He is surely on a weight training program to work that angle but he is also simply a new player tossed into the mix without having had the benefit of a full off-season to gel with the starting unit. Some guys just don't take it as seriously as they should until they're thrust into the limelight. He is going to make some very nice plays and is also going to horribly FAIL on occasion. The key is to ensure those failures diminish over time. Houck is working his magic. I trust in Houck.

Actually if you re-watch the play, the outside rusher is Phillips' responsibility. Free had the inside guy. As soon as the linebacker backs off in to coverage, Free gets on his horse and assists Phillips giving Romo the extra split second to complete the pass. Heady play by Free, and game changing IMO.

Yep and usually the rule is the guy who comes inside is the biggest threat so thats who you block.

Once the DE released outside Free knew he had outside help and his responsibility then is to release his man and make sure nobody came inside.

Once he knew that nobody was coming inside he went back to help Phillips.

Textbook stuff.

first thing any player that makes the final roster gets is his weight training plan from Joe. For all offensive linemen especially they work right away on increasing strength without becoming muscle bound and losing quickness. If you do not follow the plan Joe gets on your tail. If you do not listen your position coach gets on your tail. If you still do not listen you are gone. So get off the Fantasy Island Express that Free can get any stronger after 3 years here. All we can hope is that he can improve his technique.

I have been impressed with Free, I think he has done a solid job filling in for Colombo and I think he has a future in Dallas.

I've been pretty pleased that the team has stayed competitive after bringing back ups in (Free & Ball) whereas it seemed in the past the team would just crater.

They've competed hard in every game this year and that's really all I can ask for.

I'm still bummed the staff wasn't developing Buehler as a back up and don't understand why that didn't happen, what the heck do kickers do all day anyway, couldn't someone spend the time to figure out how to use his strong leg for more than kick offs? I also wish our staff would trust some of the younger players more and not wait until injuries to get them in. I think Hurd and O-tree could do as much or more than Roy (sadly). I guess that's being too greedy.......

In Marc Colombo's absence Doug Free has shown me that he will be a big part of the future offensive line. I think he is more suited for left tackle due to his athleticism, he just needs to continue to improve his technique.

I've been high on Free for since he took over. He's been solid since his first game. I think we've got something there.

For all those critics of Free, what are all the times that Free has been bullrushed back into Romo. I just don't remember many such plays. I do see LBs and DES routinely being steered about 5 yards away from Romo with Free planted against their chests anytime they try a speed rush.

While it is true this rarely happens to Flo, it is also true that he is a huge liability against speed rushers.
