This is a positional breakdown of this years draft class and how it lines up with the Cowboys team needs. The goal is to get back to the Super Bowl or at a minimum finally make it back to the conference championship game. Both used to be commonplace but we've gotten so used to mediocracy it almost seems like wishful thinking these days.
Team Needs (very high, high, medium, low, very low)
Our Defense was historically bad last year. Teams that play at a high level in the playoffs have one unit top ten and the other top 15. Our offense is probably at least top 15 but our defense was towards the bottom
DT Very High Interior pass rush is non-existent and we set a franchise record for most rushing TDs given up. Of the two Super Bowl teams Suh had 6 sacks and Jones had 7.5.
DE High Our top DEs combined for 10 sacks last season, that should al least be 15-20.
LB High LVE hasn't been the same player since his surgery and they haven't picked up his 5 year option. Jaylon has the instincts of a gnat and is contact shy, not the characteristics you look for in a LB. Neal is going to be our third LB and the last time we tried that was with Roy Williams and it failed miserably. In addition we need bodies Thomas and Lee are gone.
CB Very High Even barring injury is anybody confident we could win a Super Bowl with Brown, Diggs, and Lewis?
FS Very High Woods wasn't great but they haven't really replaced him. Kazee is coming off an injury that usually takes two years to fully recover from if at all. The Cowboys seem to think so too judging by the UDFA type contract they game him, it was less than HaHa's contract last year.
Draft Prospects:
DT There are two DTs with starting grades ranked 12th and 40th and they both could upgrade the Interior pass rush.
DE There are six Edge Rushers with a starting grade none of them are finished products and two of them are OLB types. They are ranked from 19-42
LB There are five LBs with starting grades ranked from 6-36
CB It's a deep CB class and as we saw with Awuzie's contract starting caliber corners are expensive in FA. There are seven CBs with starting grades ranked from 5-45
FS There are two safeties with starting grades ranked 33 and 46.
Outlook With two picks in the first two rounds they will need to decide which positional groups on defense are the highest priority and address those first. If we take an offensive player in one of the first two rounds it gets worse. A trade back in the first could land more early picks and possibly more players with staring grades. We probably aren't going to the Super Bowl or even the conference championship game next year.
