Draft Countdown New Mock: JJ Watt

the only D line man I want from the first round is Dareous

I will puke if we go DE in the first

the rest are JACGS

we can find JAG in later rounds

its to deep of class to wasting a pick on a DE in first

It's a deep D-Line class.

ahh, all this JJ Watt bickering takes me all the way back to the year of "location" or as most call it 2010. Yes, way back then when projections of a DE from another Big10 School by the name of PSU offered up a prospect to the gods of the NFL by the name of Jared Odrick and even then when projected by the draft gods and geeks to land in Big D there was much debate.

If we were drafting in our normal 20-25 range, I'd be thrilled with Watt.

At #9? No stinkin way.

J.J. Watt will be over drafted due to need at the 5 technique. He will not be a cornerstone player, and I'm far from sold on him being a force when kicked inside. Chris Long was more highly rated, and he was drafted in the top 5. That didn't work out, because he was over drafted. Adam Carriker comes to mind... I'm far from sold that Watt's work out at the combine will translate into the NFL.

I think Watt may be a solid starter at the 5 technique and will be nothing special when kicked inside. In fact, I could see him becoming a two down player like Marcus Spears.

I think Watt is a true second round player, but there usually are not enough first round grades to fill 32 spots, anyway.

Can someone please name one quality DL from Wisconsin, who is now playing in the NFL?

Watt has no business being in the conversation at 9.

Round 2:

40 DALLAS COWBOYS: Marcus Cannon, OT / OG, T.C.U.
Scouting Report
Huge 360 lb. mauler with surprising athleticism who can project to guard or tackle

Approval.

Couple thoughts: Bruce Carter, Ras-Dowling, and Johny Patrick going mid round 2. Big jump.

Even better...

Fairley is the better player by leaps and bounds. How is it even an argument?

Now who's the nicer guy? Watt, we all know that.

I don't condone dirty play but I for one believe this defense needs an evil ******* on it. We're just not mean enough and who better to be our defensive enforcer than a nasty beast in the trenches.

He won't be doing too much dirty stuff when the suspensions and fines these guys get come laying down on him. Believe me, he'll clean that up quick.

But Fairley is such a mean player. Very nasty player.

I so hope we could get Dareus or Fairley.

Watt couldn't tie either of their cleets.

Put me in the camp that prefers Watt over Fairley. I think Watt is arguably the best athlete amongst the DL in the draft, and more importantly, he's a true five technique. Fairley doesn't fit Ryan's scheme nearly as well. In fact, IMO, it's a stretch to project Fairley into a 3/4.

Regardless, I think Watt will be better than Fairley in the pros. I think he has both a higher upside, and a higher floor than Fairley.

Just to show how different my opinion is to some (most?), I rate them as follows: Dareus, Watt, Wilkerson, Taylor, Jordan, Fairley.

It sounds like I'm hating on Fairley, but I'm not. I think he has a chance to be a really good pro as well. It's just a good year for DL. I think all of the players I listed are better athletes than Fairley.

What's funny is that you act like you know.

You might be right, but you might be wrong.

One thing that I do know is that playing football is way more than just about measurables like size and speed. There are plenty of guys who are the same size and strength as Reggie White, yet none of them dominated offenses like White did. There were plenty of DL with more size and speed than Randy White, yet he was more dominant by far than all those guys who played with and against him.

Fairley dominated at the highest possible level of college football, in the strongest conference, against the best offensive lines. Watt never dominated anywhere close to the way Fairley did.

So for you to say with 100% confidence that you know Watt is going to be the better NFL player is pretty damn funny to me.

What's interesting about this, IMO, is that when Randy White played, there was another player in the NFL that was considered by many as on par or perhaps even better. Don't get me wrong, I was and am a huge Randy White fan but at the time, Howie Long was also playing up in Oakland. To me, Long is a player that I could look at and make comparisons to Watt.

I believe Watt will be a very good player in the NFL. Of course, time will ultimately tell if both Fairley and Watt end up being the players we all think they will be.

Don't worry, Watt's bigger, more athletic, just as disruptive, and not the headache that Fairley is.

Whoops, got a little overzealous there with your praise and inserted foot in mouth. :laugh2:

It may be that Watt doesn't pan out to be what many think he will be but I don't think that you can use this rational to qualify his capabilities.

How many Quality 34 LOLBs has Troy produced or how many Starting QBs has Eastern Illinois produced? How many Starting WRs has Monmouth produced or Starting LG has Sonoma State produced? This is a list that could go on for a long time.

No, I didn't. What Fairley didn't against Auburn's schedule vs what Watt did against the Wisconsin's schedule. Fairley's numbers are much more impressive.

Fairley is a dominating by sheer talent. Watt is an effort guy. He is talented, but most of his pressure comes from effort. Fairley is just so freaking talented that he dominates. Sort of like Suh. Suh just has a natural ability to dominate players.

I hear what you are saying but I would not say he's like Suh NYC. In Suh, you have a combination of both these guys. You have freakish athletic ability combined with unreal strength and a none stop motor and a real mean streak.

My point was, he has a natural ability to dominate and that it isn't just physical with Fairley. Now, if you could combine Watt's motor into Fairley, you might get closed to the type of player Suh is.

Right, which is why I said, "I hear what your saying..."

However, regardless, I would not compare either of these two players with Suh. Fairley has freakish talent but it's not anywhere near the level of Suh IMHO. I just think you have Suh and then you have everybody else at DT.

I know you like Fairley. I like his potential also but I'm far from comfortable with him. I am in the crowed who views him as an all or nothing player.

No. You are wrong. I'm not a Fairley fan. I know the man is talented, I don't like his attitude. If there was someone in the NFL to compare him too. I would compare him to Fat Albert.

I want Tyron Smith at #9.

My bad. I thought that you did like him. Sorry bout that. I'm for trade down and pick up an OL anyway.
