I have to admit, I'm confused by the logjam at WR right now. What I *think* happened is they replaced Butler with Thompson and brought in Hurns as a hedge against Dez not taking a deal and because Terrence had the undisclosed broken foot. The thought being that the competition would be good for everybody and Hurns could essentially handicap both outside positions. Physically, Hurns looks more like a possible replacement for Williams to me than he does Beasley.

You're right that the cap hits argue the opposite way. I just can't see the team putting Dak in the situation where they release his go-to third down receiver and put two new guys on the field alongside Dez who he's already not really on the same page with for whatever reason. Especially since they just drafted Switzer in part to handicap Beasely's role in the offense in case he went down because they deemed that spot too important to not have a backup just last season.

Well, the go-to third-down guy wasn't very go-to last year, so it really depends on what they want to do.

I do agree that Hurns looks more like a Williams replacement, but if the team thinks having a small slot receiver didn't pan out, then Garrett could want to go with all bigger guys. He seems to prefer bigger receivers and using smaller ones in more gimmicky roles.

Lee is too valuable to trade. I would trade Jones for a 3rd or better.

Last year we found out that the team tried to move Scandrick on draft day but had no takers. Who may be traded/made available during the draft this year.

Here are my best guess:

1. Dez. But I sort of doubt there may be any takers. Even with inflation he is still overpaid.

2. Beasley. Good player. Tradeable. Good value. One year left on his contract. For the draft pick compensation it would be a low risk deal for the acquiring team. May get a 4th or 5th out of him. He may be the odd man out with all the receivers on the roster. Plus at times I think he may have copped a bit of an attitude last year. Not sure about that tho.

3. Byron Jones. Former first round pick. They have probably been using him wrong. Haven't really settled him in but the talent is undeniable. Someone may think they know more about developing DBs and that would be hard to deny. Someone may pay a 4th or 5th for him. I'm not sure I would let him go for that.

4. Hanna. I would like to see Hanna as the heir apparent to Witten. Rico may be the guy that they will have that chance to. Hanna has speed. This is the type of player that The Hoodie would pick up and turn him into Gronk-lite. Someone might give up a 5th to 7th round pick for him. I think he is worth more than most would think he is.

5. Sean Lee. Elder statesman. If we draft two or three young guys (or plan to) them Sean Lee might become expendable. Maybe they move Jaylon to his spot and use the pick for Lee to draft another linebacker.

Lee has talent, is a good value for his contract and would be a player someone might want to put them over the top. But he doesn't have a lot of years left and we seem to be going toward the youth movement. A team might be willing to give up a 2nd or 3rd to get him. I year ago he was probably worth a 2nd but with his age a 3rd or 4th might be the most a team would offer for him.

I probably wouldn't let Lee go for less than a high 3rd in terms of pick value.

1. Nobody wants
2. Don't think we are moving him at all but never say never with the patriots
3. Not moving him
4. He will be cut
5. LOL

I don't see Hanna as Witten's replacement otherwise he would be used more already. If they don't draft a TE high then they are counting on Rico. Book it, like it or not

This draft is fairly talented at the TE position. IMO, its a terrible mistake to not take one.

Beasley is basically uncoverable at times...

I blame his lack of production last year on coaching

Except last year teams figured out he is not going any deeper than 10 yards and changed coverage to muddy the underneath routes for the whole team. When he comes in what routes does he run 75% of the time, 5-7 yard option route. He cant run anything else effectively due to limitations of being short and slow.

The strength of his game is change of direction and quickness, so that's what we do with him. I honestly don't know what he can do downfield because we rarely use him that way. That may be because he doesn't have the speed or size to escape downfield coverage, but you would think his route precision would help.

If he doesn't have the ability to get open downfield (which we have to assume based on the limited evidence, lack of opportunities), then that certainly helps the defense play him. The corner/safety plays him to the outside, a linebacker or safety plays him to the inside (actually allowing the defender to essentially sit on both him and Witten) and if he breaks deep, the outside coverage runs with him.

If Beasley is truly limited to those short routes, then he needs help to open them up. The Cowboy way would be to strengthen the outside receiver position so that a safety/linebacker can't drop into the short zone because of the need to get underneath the outside receiver's route. The other way, used by teams like the Patriots, would be to run interference (rub routes), allowing Beasley to quickly break off that into the open.
