Look no further why the Cowboys look bad. THE DRAFT. When a time throws a truckload of cash to a QB that doesn't elevate his team. Has no rushing attack ( dead last in the NFL) , Is having trouble protecting the QB and is dead last stopping the run.

This team wants to build through the draft. FINE. You damn well be a superior drafting team then. The last (2) 1st rd picks is looking to be a bust. Mazi Smith is DEAD last
119/119 as a NT. Absolutely an BUST ( so far). Guyton continues to get beat, every week and is struggling, ( along with the rest of the OL, to create rushing lanes)

Then look at the past 2nd rd picks. More of the same. And you see why this team is whirling down the toilet bowl.

But keep selling that " this team is loaded with talent" as has been the sales pitch for 30 years now.

Per board we are a top 3 drafting team.

Building through the draft is fine, but completely neglecting free agency hurts all around. If Mazi were a rotational/situational guy you might be able to get some value out of him on limited snaps. Instead they neglected the position this offseason and penciled him as the starter. Horrible move. Maybe the biggest knock on Guyton in the draft is that he was incredibly raw...If only the Cowboys could have found an older T to help the young kid along, even better if that older T was a guy who needs regular time off so that Guyton would still be able to get reps.

Bland was a heck of a CB last year....would he have been viewed as anything but a bust if he were forced to start his rookie year like they did to Caelen Carson? Sometimes you need to go get a veteran to help protect your young guys.

The issue isnt building through the draft, the issue is counting on nearly every pick to be able to contribute and contribute right away. You simply have to allow these guys time to develop.

McClay is absolutely overrated. We keep hearing how great they draft, best in the NFL yet can't win a playoff game. What even puts them in that category is the fact that the morons in charge here sign every single pick to 2nd contracts. They are dead last in utilizing outside FAs. That is a serious problem and a ridiculous strategy and in turn overrates the draft picks. Don't even get me started on pro bowls. Complete garbage of a game voted on by fans. Another misleading stat when a guy gets an alternate spot because of fan votes and it inflates his draft value. They certainly don't draft smart. 2 years they need a RB.. nope. Vaughn in the 6th is how they address it? Then go another year without grabbing one on top of it. And they still got no better anywhere else.

McClay does not make the draft picks.

We don't draft best player available frequently.

He seems to get all the credit around here for how well they draft.
Scouting departments job is to rank players. Ranking and needs do not often line up perfectly.

Jethro's FA strategy does not put us in best player available situations.

It's like many things in Dallas. Jerry is telling you how great someone or something is because he thinks it proves his football acumen. It’s just more and more evidence that he is football stupid.

"Jason Garrett is the next Tom Landry" - Garrett is out of the NFL.
"Kris Richard is a future Head Coach" - Richard was out of the NFL in 2020 and is now a position coach.
"Kellen Moore is our very own version of Sean McVay" Cowboys let him walk, Chargers let him walk.
"We are a talented roster." 2024 is telling the football world they are not.

When you try to be a draft genius and take players from small programs to outsmart people, this is what happens.

When the FO puts all their chips on the draft, it puts enormous pressure on every single draft pick to hit. If you’re really lucky in most drafts, you get 2-3 guys that can consistently play at an NFL starter level. Again, if you’re really fortunate.

But even the best run organizations know the draft is only about 60-70% of what is needed to build a contender. You need at least a couple of good FAs to sprinkle in with draft picks. And not dumpster dive FAs like Stephen loves. Because if you have back to back lean years, suddenly you are full of holes on your roster with no answers on how to fix it quickly. It’s front office malpractice.

That's exactly the point. No one has any idea who does what. McClay all good, Jerry all bad. lol The guys been here 15 years and is most certainly part of the problem at this point. I don't know who has say in FA or who even evaluates those guys but they seriously suck at it. McClay is in those meetings and has a big part in the collective decision making. Jerry's top guy and most trusted advisor as far as front office personnel go.

Jerry has made it clear he makes and or signs off on all decisions. McClay can not say no to Jerry and turn in a card for a draft pick.

It has become increasingly clear this is a very unprofessional organization…at least in the front office.

Totally agree.. and they had the perfect mentor.. in fact I couldn't think of anyone better.

A star professional.. what a missed opportunity.

If he had only played half the games.. thats ok.. Guyton could have gotten some experience.

I concur. Look at the Cowboys picks in the 4th-6th rounds over the last 20 years. That is where depth is built. And we all know that is what the Cowboys lack the most.
