If he's good to go by camp I have a tough decision to make.

I love a back with a 6th gear with this OL.

As we stand right now Im looking at guys like Coleman, Abdullah and Langford in the 3rd. But im not turning my nose up to a guy earlier if the value is there

Welcome back fellow draft geeks. It sucks that the season it over but the draft season has just begun.

I think we should start off with a needs thread. Here are my quick thoughts on the top 3 needs:

Best available defensive lineman: I think the only spot we have nailed down next season is starting the 3 and RE with a Mincey/Lawrence platoon of some sort. I would personally move Mincey to LDE but thats just me.

Corner: Missing on Mo and Carr really hurt us against the Packers and various times throughout the year. The talent level needs to be upgraded to say the least.

RB: I do not think we should give Murray top dollar IMHO. I feel fine with Randle, Williams, and draft pick walking into next year. Hey and there might be a slight chance AP becomes available.

What do y'all think?

My first thought is that need shouldn't be the to focus of the draft. That often leads to bad drafts.

They need to address needs in free agency. Obviously if players are ranking on the same tier in the draft, then they should lean towards DL and defense in general, but don't force it. They skipped over LeSean McCoy in 2009 because is was not a "need".

We should posit this more as an off season needs thread, I will rank them as I see them in order of importance

1. RB if Murray does not return and I think he won't. This is the identity of the team and I think we will sign AP
2. Starting DT
3. Starting DE
4. Starting FS
5. Real back up QB
6. PR/KR also speedy deep threat
7. CB
8. LB

If we keep Murray we could just about go all defense with this draft as far as I am concerned.

Right now team needs are Rb, WR, OT, DE, CB. S can be added if you're not sold on Wilcox/Church. Note that is right now. I expect by draft time that we will have signed 2-3 WR and probably an OT or maybe 2, and probably at least one CB, though we will have likely cut one also.

We can't really address what the needs are till after we sign our own and what ever else we are going to do in FA.

Right now I'd guess as to what will likely be the positions of depth in the 27 range are probably WR, CB, and RB. That seems to be what happens recently. Elite OT and DE are off the board earlier. I don't think we draft a DT at 27, unless someone really drops that is a 3 tech or a combo of 3/1 or we reach into the second grouping of players. Personally I hope they do what they've done recently and made a board and stuck with it. I give a pass on the Jernigan non pick the Fredbeard year because the board was constructed with 3-4 scouting and changed when Kiffen/Marinelli came in and supposedly they didn't completely blow it up. Marinelli said he didn't want Jernigan and the GM listened.

BPA regardless of position. Dont reach just to fill a position. Trade down if all your targeted players are off the board if you can find a trading partner.

Hopefully there is no trade up.

Why does everyone keeps talking about Signing AP like he's a FA but he's currently under contract and his Head coach has gone on record as saying HES NOT GOING ANYWHERE... So enough with the AP to Dallas talk he's currently not available.

Head Coach on the subject:

Because while it is possible that the Vikings keep AD and take the 15.4 million dollar cap hit for a player who's likely annoyed with them, its more likely that they cut him to recover 12 million of cap room after he laughs at taking a pay cut from them. Look at players who have a 15 million dollar cap hit, if they aren't QB's, LT or pass rushers they don't usually stay on roster for that number very long.

I do understand that and agree with that mentality but need absolutely plays a part in it. Some teams pay attention to need more than others but every team in the league drafts for need in some form or fashion. Besides, what would us draft geeks talk about?

I think there is a very good chance CB is your best value overall at 27. Not a great class, but a very strong class at DE. Teams needing to improve pass defense may look to pressure players more then reaching on a CB

For my money, a pass rush makes our current CB's much better. Can't say the same for CB play making the d-line better. Unless the value was really high, I'd rather go line.

Agreed. The only way I change my opinion is if the CB candidate is a can't miss, day-one starter. I don't see that happening unless Carr is released.

BPA with no consideration for the possibility of drafting, say, 4 wide outs in the first 4 rounds is too strict for me and, I'd have to think, for anyone. It could happen that way.

Isn't there some weighted formula for this in the current "Moneyball" era?

This draft, IMO, needs one mauler LG and then DEFENSE ALL THE WAY! DT, DE, CB, LB, S (and any OTHER position on defense I may have forgotten)!

Needs assuming a few moves are made by draft time.

FS - Wilcox>Church..Playing more man needs us to be able to have two safeties that can cover and Church just isn't that. Sorry, not sorry.

DT - Brent is a solid piece and it will be interesting to see him with a good offseason with the squad. Im thinking about dropping this on the need list only because Crawford/Bishop/(and the other rookie that went on IR) actually look promising.

RT - We need the next rookie to complete our OL. I feel confident in Leary (when healthy) and most likely sign a free agent OG.

CB - Bring a young quick prodigy in! Mo will be here, doubt Carr makes it..

Good thread, I am assuming we will sign 2 LB to return either McClain, Durant, Lawrence or Carter. LB should be in good shape with hoping a healthy Sean Lee. If we do not sign two of these guys then LB becomes a need.

CB, they played better but if Carr doesn't take a pay cut, ala Free, he will be gone post June cut. Mo he will have a great year next year, mark my words, contract year everyone plays better in their contract year, so that is a good thing. Moore will be interesting to see if they bring him back, I heard once that Marnelli thought Patmon had Barber (Tampa Bay) qualities, I think he will be one to watch for next year. I still feel that we will need a CB so I would think if they can upgrade here they need to.

Safety, I disagree that the brass doesn't see the issues that we have at safety, we need a ballhawk plain and simple. We need an upgrade, and I bet they know this to, you can continue to take bad angles game after game. Wilcox improved but a long ways to go, Church is JAG IMO. Safety is definitely a need.

DL, upgrade at 1 tech and LDE, wouldn't be surprised if we pick up a FA here because rushing the passer has to get better. It will also be a draft need, we heard Stephen say we need to address the DL like the OL. Everyone knows this is a huge need, 2 FA, 2-3 at draft.

OL, I wouldn't be shocked if we do go OT in the first round with Free and Parnell UFA I expect one back but I think the other walks and goes gets some money. Cowboys have really used the BPA approach in the first round and it has paid off huge. It seems DL may go heavy in picks ahead of us so if a strong OT slides down, I don't think we pass it up. Need kind of.

RB- Murray is probably on the way out, this class is deep at RB, I would expect us to hit this in the first 4 rounds. There is so much speed and power in this class that it is financially the best route to take and may be the best for the team, get fresh legs going. I love Murray but he took a pounding this year. RB is a need

WR- I really want a veteran WR not another rookie, we have Williams, Bryant, Beasley and Street. We need another veteran to help Bryant mentor these young guys on how to keep improving. FA need

These are my needs and the order in which I hope they would go.DL, S, RB, OL, CB, LB
