think you are mixing up Pollard and Weber for Dunbar. Weber is strickly a runner. Pollard is more of a RB/WR/KR.
Hill was not listed as a late round guy after the combine. Most draft profiles had him listed as a 1st round talent who would go 2nd or 3rd round because of issues he had with coaches in college.
That hasn't been the case for a while. They've gotten great value in the 2nd the last 5 years.I hate the value but Dallas rarely gets value in the 2nd round. IT's kinda been their round to get stupid.
McGovern gives us flexibility next year depending what happens with Collins and Williams.
One of the things this draft tells me is that the Cowboys braintrust puts a lot of faith in their ability to evaluate a player's intangibles. Hill has the motor and physical ability to play at this level. But there were potential issues with maturity and attitude that dropped him on many board 2-3 rounds (if I'm understanding the babble). Once they meet with him and develop a relationship...he changes his placement on their board.
I've always felt like Jerry believes he can have a positive impact on players that would otherwise be difficult to handle. History supports that notion with the free agents he picks up. It appears to me that that belief bleeds over into our draft picks quite a bit.
I didn't say "sure first rounder", I said 1st round talent. And he did start for his team, just not for much of his last season because of the conflict with the coaches. The question was never with his talent, it was with his attitude and coachability.
Just keep him away from the young fans. We don’t need Goodell suspending him 6 games just because he has sleep overs to watch ‘game film’ with him.I have confidence Michael Jackson will have the more success out of all draft picks.
His singing career should take off.
I disagree with you fairly regularly, but I think this is a very fair assessment of the situation. Why do many think every draft they need to get 7 starters. Well, ok, overkill there a little. But you know what I mean.
This year there were really only 2 positions to consider we need a starter. DT, but yet that player would be in a rotation rather starting or not. Bt the need of a stud DT was needed.
hey may have got that in Hill. Rather some think was overdraft, a reach, or some think he was the right pick in the right spot. Myself, I am not sure of yet, but I am glad they addressed it.
S, we needed a guy that was going to step in or soon be able to step in, even if a year away. Even in the 3rd round if they picked a S, could he step in and be a starter. Many say over Heath, yes. And I can't disagree. They picked McGovern, so maybe he can but still this was a smart move for the future.
But for all the other picks of 4 through 7, who would they pick to step in and be a starter for anyone else on the team. They added depth and possible future players. Everyone will have their opinions, but to think we were going to replace players on what seems to be a deep roster is a bit of a stretch.
I am still not sure how I feel overall about this draft. I am still looking at everything. I Amy not come up with a conclusion. LOL. I will probably go back and forth too, until I see them in TC. But I do like day 3 this year better than last year. And last year a few players grew on me.
This year I said in other threads I did not think they needed to draft the 2 DE's. But time will tell, though I see them both as PS players for now.
I haven’t studied the guys we picked at all but it will be interesting to see how they fare. Just based off of what I am hearing, here are a couple of observations:
Hill- Lots of conflicting info on this guy. The “traits” that I keep hearing about (very explosive for a big guy and quick first step” indicate he has a chance, but he seems to be listed as a late round guy who could be a steal late. Sounds like an overdraft to me. I’m willing to give the Cowboys the benefit of the doubt on this one, but this has Marinelli all over it. So if he bombs I hope he takes Marinelli with him.
McGovern- The team referred to him as a blinking light based on draft value and we didn’t have to have a guard so they didn’t reach for need. Just based on team comments it sounds like this guy has the least chance of being a bust out of this class based on draft position.
Weber- Sounds like a good value pick that late in the draft. I’m glad we didn’t wait to pick up a RB in UDFA because no one is going to want to come and sit behind Zeke freely.
Jelk- Another blinking light comment on this guy. Based on these comments you expect that they had him high on their draft board.
If you go by what the talking heads say, then we reached a lot. If you believe in the Cowboys’ draft process then maybe we parlayed that compensatory 4th into a couple of solid players for us. If one of the 3 players they got for that pick hit, then it was a good move.
I think the Cowboys seem very confident in what they are wanting to accomplish. I will say this: I love the emphasis on the trenches on both sides.
If he becomes a star, no one will care where he's drafted. I think people put too much into where a player is drafted. The DT isn't as sexier of a pick as a S and that's what most people look at, I think. But, we were gashed in that Rams game. We basically shut down Goff and the passing game. DT is what was more important in my opinion.Trysten Hill is the kind of player you can be excited about in the late 3rd or 4th round but overdrafting him in the 2nd is what makes me hate the pick.
He's just a piece of clay. Outside of that he is raw and this pick will take some work.
On top of that he had reduced playing time because evidently his coaches and him didn't get along.
I hate the value but Dallas rarely gets value in the 2nd round. IT's kinda been their round to get stupid.
I've heard Hill projected anywhere from round 2 to round 5. Hard to judge, but seems to be a round 1-2 talent.
McGovern gives us flexibility next year depending what happens with Collins and Williams.
Weber to me feels like replacing Dunbar from a few years ago.
Jelk, I haven't seen much on but I keep hearing he is a steal where we picked him.
I don’t disagree with this. I was just responding to a comment someone made that Hill projected to go late in the draft when that wasn’t the case.I’m not for or against the pick. I’m waiting to find out more info before developing an opinion.
Let’s not move the goal posts though. He didn’t start for his own team last year. That doesn’t mean that he won’t be a great pick or turn out to be a hall of famer for that matter. But let’s not pretend it’s not a real life fact.
Just keep him away from the young fans. We don’t need Goodell suspending him 6 games just because he has sleep overs to watch ‘game film’ with him.
I don't even think he's a good d line coach. Why because he inherited sapp and simeon rice. Who has he turned from late round pick or udfa into a pro bowler?I think Rod is a good D line coach but a bad Def coordinator. His scheming just like JG is outdated and the NFL has passed them by.
