Draft thoughts 3-31

Pre-salary cap era. Rice and Irvin played on the greatest teams of all time with HOF QBs. Megatron, Randy Moss, TO are all HOFers but not going to carry a team with mediocre talent at other "Premium" positions. When one receiver is taking up 20% of your salary cap, it's very likely your team is not going to be championship caliber. QB alone won't do it but no question that it's a premium position. The single most important position pretty much every person would agree. Takes an entire defensive unit to outdo a HOF caliber QB.

I'm sorry, there is one position that is more important than QB and doesn't count toward the salary cap at all. Dallas doesn't seem to want to address it though for some reason when it costs no draft/cap resources. Head coach.

I've been saying it for a while
Don't need a #1 WR
Need WRs who can run multiple routes and catch and are disciplined i.e. Need a real coaching staff

NE finally did it with Cooks because Brady is just about done. They never burned a huge chunk of resources on a receiver any other time. Randy Moss was a buy low candidate when he was out loafing in Oakland.

Den? On who? Demaryius? He was picked right before Dez was and he's not even close to what Megatron/Moss etc are. He's making 8.5 mil in 2018, that's not close to 20% of a team's cap.

Seattle? huh?

Atl yes Julio Jones is a generational HOF talent. He is the one outlier here. I will give him credit because ATL should have won that SB vs NE.

Phi? Alshon is similar to Demaryius level, Agholor was a 1st round pick and he helped a little. Nelson Agholor is not carrying a team to a championship.
DEN - DThomas signed the same 5-70m deal Dez did.......he got a 4m bonus last week on top of his 8.5m salary......plus ESanders and WWelker

SEA- traded huge picks for SRice and PHarvin and gave them 10m+...drafted GTate in 2nd

PHI - paid AJeffrey 4/64m this year......gave TSmith 5m and drafted Agohlor early

The myth of not needing top WRs is just that .....a myth

Nick Foles
Joe Flacco
Trent Dilfer
Eli Manning all won the Super Bowl

guess you don't need a top QB either

Denver #1 defense in the league. Peyton still has Peyton's mind even if his neck ruined his arm strength.

Seattle #1 defense in the league. Sidney Rice? What the ****, how did he get in this conversation. Was he an inactive player taking up a chunk of their cap in their superbowl year? He certainly wasn't a huge part of their championship run. Too bad about his injury. Not a valid argument. Golden Tate being a late 2nd round pick, ok great. That's a fine spot to spend on a WR. If Dallas uses #50 on a WR, no complaints there in this draft with a ton of depth.

PHI - Defense was their strong suit all year even if it wasn't in the superbowl. Gonna give credit to the head coach to get it done with Foles in limited time. They had a complete team with no real standouts other than trenches and coaching.

Flacco/Dilfer - Carried by defense/running game.
Eli Manning - Carried by defense. Heros of superbowls --> David Tyree and Mario Manningham. Plaxico Burress gets an honorable mention but he's just a complimentary piece.

All I'm seeing here is use all of our picks on defense, which probably isn't wrong.

Swap 1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks with Pittsburgh for Martavis Bryant.

Please.

Yeah, it is about having the best overall roster and game plan.
Having the right QB helps.
Having the right LT helps.
Having a shut down corner helps.
Having a WR that is a threat helps.
Having a war daddy DE helps.

But the team with the overall best roster wins.

Pretty straight forward

You take the top player on of your board
If the top player is not a player of need, you could look to trade back.
If you have several available at the top of your board that are bunched together (evaluated about the same) then of course take the one you need the most.

But do not reach for need...especially in the early rounds.

Agree 100%. The only comment I would make is the injuries change need so, unless another team blows your socks off in a trade down scenario, go with BPA.

first round pick this year on a WR would be a mistake.

Ridley isn’t elite.
I'd prefer to not take a WR at 19 this year...too many good ones available later.

But who at 19 is "elite"?

I think if Vea slid, he has a chance to be elite. I am more bullish on Evans than most.

Ridley is a guy that has limitations IMO. Very good player but when I think first round WR, I think of guys like Green, Jones, even Bryant when he came out.

we better draft a WR...Thompson only signed a 1yr deal,TWill is hurt and Hurns does have an injury history.Glad we signed them both but it wouldnt stop me from drafting one.
I love the additions on the OL...but Fleming and Martin signed 1yr deals.
We better draft a OL or 2.

Since when has WR been a premium pick?

How many super bowls do the best WRs that demand the most money have? Blue Chip WRs are not a necessity, just nice to have.

Even more so with rb, the easiest position to transition and draft and yet we use pick number 4 on one.

Denver won their recent Super Bowl because of their defense, and in spite of there offense. Thomas had 1 catch in the Super Bowl they won.

Seattle paying Rice and Harvin was just dumb General Management, as those guys had very little impact on that roster.

Philly - Alshon had 57 catches for 780 yards this year in their Super Bowl run.

I'm not saying quality WR play is not important, I just don't think you have to have an all pro out there to win and make it happen. Half the time it's quality QB play that makes or breaks the WR. Look no further than the WRs Romo worked with...he got Miles Austin and Laurent Robinson paid.

There is a drastic range between All-Pro and what the Cowboys had at WR in 2017.

That is not the point.... the point is that they all SPENT big money and draft picks on WRs

Analyzing one game for a trend is useless.......too much SSS

Doug Baldwin one of the most underrated receivers in the league, said before this year I would take him over Dez, people scoffed at me then.

You are doing 2 things are not good building goals.

1: Need based drafting.

2: OGs and 4-3 LBs shouldn't be the goal in the 1st round. The premium positions are:
QB
Pass Rusher (Includes some DTs)
LT
WR
CB

Obviously BPA overrides position value but for similar tier talent the goal is to draft the premium positions in the 1st.

If a team is 1 OG from a Super Bowl, they can find one in free agency, trade, etc.. If they are a LT away they're probably out of luck unless they draft one.

I would add S to that list considering the scarcity.

As far as I’m concerned a quality guard, gadget back and the rest can be used on the defense. I just want 2/10 picks to be offense, three at most.

because they paid doesn't mean the comment is nullified . Its does mean that those FO's agree with you
