Draft Value Question

No one wants to rebuild the OL more than I do, but this week, both PFN and PFF draft simulators have suddenly moved to where Drake London and Treylon Burks are both showing up as available more and more at #24, along with Trevor Penning occasionally. Suddenly teams in the sim are going more and more for defense or the smaller speedy receivers as the draft draws nearer.

With the OL depth in this draft, I’m curious how many people really want to pass on a WR like London, Burks, or Olave if there just to get a first round left guard over a 2nd round left guard.

If a special WR with size or speed is there, I’m starting to lean towards getting one on a rookie contract and pick up my guard later.

People forget that some of the best WR in the NFL were drafted on the 2nd and 3rd days. For me I would take Alec Pierce from Cincinnati before Burks or London or Olave. Still think Dallas can trade down a few spots and pickup an extra 3rd and get Zion Johnson who is the best OG and could also play OC.

There's a ton of WR depth in this draft as well and none of the ones predicted to go early are special imo.

If London, Burke, Penning (and presumably Green and/or Zion), I'd be trading down.

Lamb would be the top WR in this draft. There are about 10 WRs that grade out better than Gallup and Washington but you have to consider NFL experience and the learning curve. Even if they drafted one of the top 5 WRs they would probably get Cedrick Wilson type production from them in their rookie year. On the other hand if you pick Green, you have a plug and play day 1 starter who instantly upgrades your run game and by extension your play action pass game and defense (by keeping the offense on the field). Just from one player. I think it's a no brainer. Here are the WRs this year in the draft with their draft grade and last years WRs with their draft grade (per NFL) and rookie stats (receptions, yards).

Just me, but I'm wondering if coaches, GMs and owners are trying to put a lid on the escalating contracts of the position. Adam and Hill's contracts got their attention. Notice KC and Packers passed and it now appears the 49ers also.

I was questioning this a while back. The O-line depth will go into the 4th rd easily. The WR depth will not get past the 3rd. The D-line will barley make the 3rd. And I think the O-line/D-line talent is too good to pass for one of these WR's. Even the top WR's this year, IMHO, are just above ave talent level at best.
I came to the conclusion that upgrading our lines (both sides of the ball) will have a much greater impact than a decent WR would.

How is it that people are saying there are no special WRs or much of a difference between rounds 1 and 3?

Listen I would have not let Cooper go or at least signed a pretty good WR in FA, but there is not a good reason to not try to get a WR that can play slot and eventually start on the outside too.

You are not going to find a guy like that in the third round. Trade up in the second for that? Yeah maybe, but if not at the bottom of the first, there are no more viable WRs, really.

And I did not even want to draft a single WR in this draft but they are in a hole right now without a starter, so.

Also as a strange mantra going around here lately. No Washington is not a slot WR, never has been and never will be.
