Drew Boylhart (the huddle report): Tyron Smith

it is really easy to pick and choose where he was right. But it is just as important to see where he was wrong. Bennetts blocking has certainly been his strength; kind of disagrees with what he said. He certainly seems to sustain his blocks at the next level.

OK, sounds good. Btw, you and others have done a very job of selling Smith recently that I have actually come around on him at #9

Goose has Smith as his Top OT prospect in this draft class. I have heard that his board is well respected all over the media and even by the NFL.

Your right, I am sure Tyron has some weakness in his game. But he as all the skill sets physically, mentally we won't really know until he goes up against Ware, Orakpo and Mathews.

But he did have a good game against Cam Jordan of Cal. The same Jordan who was eating up Senior Bowl OT's.

Even the best in the scouting business are wrong a lot.

You are right about it being easy to pick and choose, like I initially stated he is no Nostradamus but above average and happily shows his archive so you can 20/20 hindsight him. I think of a big bust for the huddlereport as a player named Marcus Monk from Arkansas who he thought would be a sleeper but never amounted to anything with the Giants two years ago.
Here is one of his big sleepers so you can look back after the draft and decide: Johnny White from North Carolina
"I saw Johnny in two games this year before he got injured. The first time he took the ball on a run, the hair on the back of my neck stood up and I got the "this kid has star power" chills. The announcers talked about how he has played on both side of the ball, but all I can tell you is that seeing him at running back seemed like he had been there all of his life. He knows how to set up blocks for his offensive linemen and can catch the ball down the field. In fact, Johnny was North Carolina's whole offense before he got injured. I don't know if Johnny will get selected in this draft. Remember the name Johnny (The Natural) White because when he gets on the field, you cannot deny seeing his natural talents and his ability to impact. He just has to stay healthy. I know I'm going out on a limb here as far as most people are concerned, but this is why we use the two board system. I am not bound to tell you what you want to hear or expect to hear. All I am bound to do is tell you what I see. You Mark Ingram fans and Jordan Todman fans, don't worry. Johnny will not sniff the 1st round or 2nd round. In fact, he most likely won't be selected in the first three rounds, but he will be one of the best running backs out of this draft when it is all said and done."

I'm basing what I say on what I personally have observed. I have not seen all the film there is to see just several games. At times he's quick enough. At other times he's a tad slow although I'm talking about slower than a good NFL tackle. He's obviously talented. I just see some weaknesses in his game. I'm not an offensive line guru so what I think means not a lot. OTOH I've been watching NFL football for 50+ years.

I wasn't knockin' your take on Smith.

Just putting out someone elses take on the same player.

Oh, thanks but I didn't take offense. I was just letting all know I've made up my own mind about him vs just listening to the mantra. He's definitely the most athletically talented OT in this draft. I really like his upside and I think he will become a very solid or better OT in time. He will struggle some his first year both with speed and bull rushers. In his third year he will either be the Man or a bust.

In Boylhart's latest draft, he has us taking Fairley. Thought that was interesting.

I'm not too keen on Fairley. I'd rather take Watt and look for a true NT later on.

Fairley is a way better player than Watt, it's not close.

To me, this player has the biggest upside of anybody in this draft. However, I do agree with you in that there are concerns. He has some issues in his past, some say he is dirty and he really only did it for one year. Both of those things are legit concerns IMO. I've also heard that he is lazy but I don't know. I have not seen that out of him so IDK.

If Tyron Smith can ever move to LT that is some serious ups too. Though the longterm could sift out for him, there are many players in this Draft ready to make more of an impact this season than Tyron Smith.

Drew seems pretty accurate, prolly trust him more than the Dallas GM, wonder what Boylhart has to say about Fairly, Bowers, Peterson, Dareus, Quinn and the Artist presently know as Prince...

If Fairley were available, I'd take him. Worth the risk, IMO.

My exact worries. High upside and high risk. I'd rather play it more safe.

Fairley:

Thinks he's a boom or bust player. Doesn't regard him as highly as many do. Thinks that he is a 1 gap player at this point. Needs more upper body strength and more knowledge to become a good pro NT or DT. Compares him to Dorsey.

Bowers:

Thinks he has huge upside. Very talented athletically but is not a finished product. He worries about his attitude. Thinks he may have issues putting in the work it will take to be dominating. Strictly a 43 DE.

Dareus:

Likes everything about him except his conditioning. Thinks he needs to be better conditioned to sustain his efforts at the next level. Thinks he's one of the more solid picks in this draft. Has minor concerns with his involvement with an agent but thinks that NFL owners won't really care about that. Thinks he will be a very good Pro.

Quinn:

Thinks that he is one of the best athletes in this draft but does not believe that his play on the field matches his athleticism. Quick first step but only puts out maximum effort when he beats his man cleanly. Believes that when he's blocked, he stays blocked. Doesn't fight through the block. Medical concerns, character concerns, performance concerns. Too many red flags to be a top 10 pick. Compares him to Maybin.

Prince:

Said he was more of a Morris Day fan. :)

Thinks Prince is a good player. Strong, Good size, good speed but will have trouble initially with quick receivers. Thinks that it will take time for him to learn how to use his size and strength against quick receivers to gain advantage. Thinks that Prince might be a better fit at Safety in the NFL.

There is more on all of these players but I'm basically doing the cliff notes thing.
