Do those come with pronunciation guides??:
I think there's a website online that has pronunciations for each distillery.

For life?

I haven't seen him in months.

He may have just quit. I know he was going through a dispute with a business partner who owed him a lot of money.

:laugh2:

If I'm gonna drink it I have to know how to pronounce it. Can't have the appearance of culture if I butcher the pronunciation.

You can always wing it or ask what it is.

I wish Lewpac was still here. He was a bartender for years. I think he got banned because of the Political Zone.
That guy was a real piece of work.

Most bartenders won't have a clue. I had one that tried to correct me once, but the guy was butchering it.

"I don't even know what that drink is, man."

I had trouble placing this guy in my memory .. until I recalled the "tipping" thread.

He was definitely a partier.

To be diplomatic he partied like Michael Irvin and eventually lost all his teeth.

I didin't know it did that.

That thread was 11 pages?

Do people really have such concrete feelings on leaving a tip?

Just grab a bottle or two of single malts and start experimenting. If you can get it at your local bar, it's not that great. They typically stock a few low end Scotches, like Macallan 12 year or Glenlivet 12 year. Macallan 18 ain't bad and Macallan 25 is really good.

I prefer what are called Islay Scotches (they're made on an island call Islay). Bruichladdich or Caol Ila are good, but these may require a more developed Scotch taste because they're certainly more "flavorful." Caol Ila is by far my favorite Scotch.

I would get something like a Dalwhinnie or a Talisker as a starter.

Don't get any blended malts.

No love for Laphroaig?

I agree on the advice of staying away from blended whisky. The only way it can be recommended is as an introduction, a way to slowly develop the palette for single malts. The decent blended Walkers are expensive enough that you really should just buy a single malt. I've only tasted Walker Blue twice and it's very tasty but I can't help but imagine what a comparable priced single malt (which I haven't experienced) is like.

edit: oh and like Theo said, Talisker is a great starter.

I'm 21 about to turn 22 but haven't really taken advantage of my ability to consume alcohol. What do ya'll recommend? I don't like anything too strong, so things like Guinness is out. I'm basically looking for some great mixed drinks, I prefer something with Vodka, Gin, or Rum. So far I enjoy a good Gin & Juice, anything along those lines would be good. And I'm not willing to spend a ton so something relatively cheap is good.

Since you haven't as of yet, I suggest you just not take advantage of it. You are far better off without alcohol than you are consuming it.

What is a good scotch?

McAllen is one of if not my favorite scotch. It gets better as you go up in years (and price). I generally stick with the 12 year though just because of the cost evolved.

Now that said. If you are going to drop some money on something VERY good. There is a Bushmills 21 year Irish Whiskey. It cost about $100-$115. The first time I tasted it, it completely blew me away. More than any year McAllen Scotch ever has.
