As a parent of a son whose dream is to one day play in the NFL, I welcome this rule.
It is a very solid example that can be pointed to (without having to lecture or preach) as a consequence of substance abuse.
I could talk until I'm blue in the face about this stuff, but if I point to Merriman, and then state that his substance abuse will keep him out of the Pro Bowl this year, it will make more impact on my son than a thousand lectures or warnings.
While I will not ever yield in trying to convince my kids to stay away from this stuff, it is comforting to have an organization like the NFL (that knows that these players are role models for kids, like it or not), reinforcing the values that we try to pass on to the young ones.
