OXNARD, Calif. – Chris Whaley is on his way back to Dallas after suffering a torn Achilles on Monday evening.

Whaley was carted off the field in the middle of the Cowboys’ Monday practice, causing concern that the team had suffered its first major injury of training camp. Those concerns have been confirmed.

It’s a particularly tough blow for Whaley, who missed his entire rookie season with a torn ACL. The Texas standout tore that tendon during his senior season with the Longhorns, and the Cowboys put him through a “redshirt” season of sorts after signing him as an undrafted free agent in the spring of 2013.

It wasn’t necessarily a guarantee that Whaley would crack the 53-man roster, but the Cowboys were excited about what he might bring to the table in Rod Marinelli’s defensive scheme – particularly as the ever-important three-technique defensive tackle.

The loss leaves the Cowboys with Tyrone Crawford, Terrell McClain, Nick Hayden, Davon Coleman and Ken Bishop as the remaining defensive tackles on the roster. McClain and Hayden are coping with minor injuries, however, which leaves them slightly short on depth at the position.

It remains to be seen if they’ll address the position in free agency.

That's a horrible break for Whaley (no pun intended).

Keep him as far away from Tyrone Crawford as possible. No bad mojo.

I feel bad for him. That's probably it for him in Dallas now.

Sorry to hear this. I was pulling for him to make the team.
Wonder if they will place him on IR, give him another chance next year. Or just waive / injure, and come to an injury settlement. Too early to know or be concerned with though.

He was a pet cat for me. His college game footage was very good; however, I was getting the impression that he was low on the depth chart up to this point in TC. It seems Coleman, Bishop and even Jack Crawford were ahead of him at DT. They've also been playing Russell more at DT than DE from what I've seen.

Could we finally see Hayden knocked off of this roster?

Can someone tell me the proper amount of concern I should show for this injury? I don't want to appear insensitive, but at the same time don't want to give the impression of being a Chicken Little?

They probably gave him a split contract that would allow then to keep him on IR for way less than the normal minimum salary. They would have to give him an injury settlement anyway, so they might as well keep him on IR.

I'm just wondering if they will feel at this point that his body and frame simply aren't made to handle the rigors of the game?

Hate to hear that about Whaley, I was really looking forward to him getting a chance to show what he could do.

I was afraid of this news. It sucks for Whaley but at least we have enough bodies it doesn't put us in a bind. Hopefully we'll see Whaley next summer trying to make the team again after a full recovery.

He is still getting the starter reps from what I've seen/heard. Marinelli has a sick fascination with Hayden. It does not help that T. McClain has another injury. It would be a combination of McClain and Bishop that would unseat Hayden if it were to happen. Most of the other DTs are 3techs, not 1techs. Coleman has been playing both, but I don't think they trust him because of his personality. Whaley also played both but he is done now with the injury.

Maybe, but the savings of an injury settlement vs keeping him on IR is minimal is there is any savings at all.

Well, if that's the case, I can see your point. But I just don't think the Cowboys will invest anything in him long term at this point.

Waive - Injury settlement.

?

They will likely waive him. No team will claim him and then he will revert to IR. At that point they have 5 days (I think it's 5) to give him a settlement or just keep him on IR. If he signed a split contract that pays less if on IR, then there might not be any savings to give him a settlement.
