Something I think people forget sometimes is that a 1T is actually a gap, not an actual position. On passing downs, sometimes teams play a DT in a 1T. Sometimes they play that DT in a 3T.

As far as players you draft to play that 1T, the most valuable of which are players that also have to ability to play the 3 Gap as well. Dallas was very interested in Vita Vea in 2018, because he had "3T traits"

Two players that really come to mind in this draft are Tuefle and McNeil. Both are built to play in that 1T spot, but also have traits that should allow to line up in a 3T spot on passing downs.

What other DT's in this draft that you think could play both gaps

IMO Alim McNeil fits the description perfectly

I think if the Cowboys are going to draft a DT as high as the 2nd round, that player needs to be more of a 3 down player with rush abilities. A two down run stuffer would be more likely taken late on day 2, early day 3. Player like Shelvin.

Something we have to keep in mind, Quinn's base defense is a little different then what we have seen under Marinelli, it's kind of a hybrid 4-3/3-4:

Wide 9T DE (more of a DE/OLB)
3T (one gap penetrator-which Marinelli also used)
0T (two gapping NT)
4T DE (more of a 3-4 DE)

McNeil clearly fits the 0T like a tee, Tuefele actually played a lot of 4T two seasons ago. Where do you draft them? It's possible both could be there at 75, many media boards have them as 2nd rd prospects, but Dane had Tuefle at 69 and McNeil at 98.

Bobby Brown is a guy that can both be a backup 0T and play the 3T.
He is big enough to anchor, but still quick enough to 1 gap.

I like McNeil the best, but I think Dallas should take both McNeil and Brown.

It is gonna be interesting to see what Quinn brings to DL. In Seattle he played Mebane primarily at 0 and 1T, and played all of Red Bryant 330 lbs at 4T

Ultimately. I think he needs to develop more of a pass rushing arsenal to consistently rush from a 3T. But in terms of physical talent, he is probably your best "1T" in the draft.

I think Tufele offers more immediate returns

I honestly think both are second rounders when all is said amd done. McNeil could get over drafted due to raw talent

While theres always a chance at a diamond in the rough, i think this team needs to go into FA. I would love Watt even at his age. But i would probably love Tomlinson more. He's a big body who can get after a QB too.

I need to watch more of Brown. Ive seen some questions about his motor which negates alot when playing as a 1T

If both are on the board, who do you take? I would lean towards McNeil.
McNeil. His ceiling is pretty high. Even if they only play him at a 1T as a rookie, he will still likely play 500 or so snaps. That's about how many Nnadi plays in KC and he only plays 1T. By year 2 he can probably give you gap flexibility and play 700 or so snaps. I think he has All Pro potential if he hits his ceiling
