Dumb Jocks?

That's the obvious answer. But the people saying such things apparently don't even think the players are smart enough to do the obvious... hire someone who knows what they're doing to look at them.

There are those who if it were not for football would be dead or in Jail. Pacman Jones I think is an idiot and got this far in life because he has an ability not because he is smart. There are many who would throw away careers over stupid things like drugs sorry those guys are not smart.

I do not identify with football players, union members or lawyers.

I can only identify with white billionaires. Sorry if that offends you, it's just the way I was raised.

You're like the CZ Anna Nicole Smith. Only probably not fat, and not dead yet. But you're smart like she was.

Of course there are dumb ones. There are smart ones too.

All I'm stating is that lately this stuff has been coming up (or at least where I've seen most of it) in reference to the financial statements of the teams. It's not like the players are wanting Pacman to take a look at the financials and see what he thinks.

Although he might be able to sniff out where the owners "skrip klub" expenses are hidden.

Jerry Jones gets called an idiot on this board more than any player ...... and he is a self made billionaire.

So I do not see the point. Both sides get called dumb and stupid.

He's an idiot when it comes to football matters, the Barry Switzer hiring alone made that abundantly clear. If you need further evidence, see Roy Williams/Joey Galloway trades or 90% of the draft picks from 1995-2010, sans maybe the couple of good Parcells drafts.

But, in general, people tend to over-estimate the business acumen of the NFL owners as a whole. There are some great business minds and self made millionaires like Jerry Jones and Arthur Blank who have been successfull in many business ventures. Many live off of their NFL team alone, and are legacy owners or inheritants of legacy owners who rode smarter men's coattails. Others like Pat Bowlen simply inherited a ton of dough from his father. And when you look at the entirety of business dealings of someone like Dan Snyder, it's clear he's not exactly a masterful business man himself (see Six Flags).

In the meantime, I never hear stories about Madieu Williams, who couldn't pick up his NFL Man of the Year award at the Superbowl for his outstanding commitment to local charities, because he was pre-occupied visiting troops in the Gulf. Funny how the people who want the players to shut up, take a pay cut and die young don't bring him up as their examples of NFL players.

But it's pretty amazing when you hear the cognitive dissonance of these two thoughts put together with so much frequency a) "The players are mostly dumb jocks criminals and meat heads who are lucky they get paid as much as they do and the owners are all a bunch of independently wealthy brilliant business men" and b) "The owners had no choice but to cancel out the current CBA and force a lockout, because the players took them to the cleaners in 2006 and negotiated them under the table."

Lets put it this way. Do you honestly believe that if it weren't for football, 95% of these guys would have been to college? Or gotten a degree for that matter? NO. I'm willing to bet a majority of the players in the NFL failed miserably in high school. If it weren't for football they'd be flipping burgers at MCdonalds.

95% of players in the league are just plain stupid and uneducated.

Antonio Cromartie literally can't read.

It's hard to make time to learn to read when you're out fathering your next child of the month...

I can vouch for that. You don't need no smarts you just need to be at ever class.

The dumb jock thing imo is a sterotype.

There are alot of academically gifted as well as athletically gifted football players out there.

I happen to know one personally from my hometown and the guy is razor sharp smart and he could be a very good lawyer one day because he has that quality about him.

The media wants to dumbify football players in such instances as to what happened to Myron Rolle last year a Rhodes Scholar from Florida State who, with the blessing of Coach Bobby Bowden to go over and study at Oxford University, and some of the mediots grilled him for choosing something as prestigious as the Rhodes Scholar award and a once in a lifetime education from Oxford over football and it really showed before last year's draft when his commitment to the team was being questioned.

Greg McElroy is this year's Rolle a Rhodes Scholar nominee and his high score on the wonderlic which I think is a joke of a test anyway was the subject that he is too smart to play in the NFL talk about an insult.

Good post AD.

But Ringmaster you cant counter a point by simply citing exceptions, every point in the world has exceptions. And to serve up a single anecdotal instance is to say nothing.
Bad post.
