I'm sure this has been discussed here before. Does anyone know if it's called a

A)Shovel Pass
B)Shuttle Pass
C)Shuffle Pass

I've heard it called all three but I was discussing it the other night with my brother during the game.

Anyone know the correct term and it's origination?

It's "Shovel Pass" to my knowledge, but I don't know the origins...

My bad...I just called my dad on this one (he was a football coach for 17 years). He said It is called a SHUFFLE pass.

Saw an NFL Films thing on this once, and I'm pretty sure a majority of coaches, players, and Paul Tagliabue himself called it a shovel pass.

You are correct.

They actually went to many coaches and had different answers but the majority was the shovel and yes Tags said so as well.

Interesting thing in that story was that both the shovel and shuffle pass have been terms that have been used in official NFL stats pages.

The story goes however that it was a shovel pass because it was an underhand type pass similar to someone using a coal shovel.

I have heard A and C but never B.

I believe C is the correct term.

Exactly.

Probably was originally Shuffle or Shovel and both fit and make sense, so either is acceptable. Phonetically they are similar, so at some point someone said the other and the story goes on from there.

On Monday night, Drew Pearson said it was definitely a "shovel" pass... At least for coach Landry. ;)

It's shovel.

What I don't understand is the "scream pass"

:lmao2:

Sorry.

The original name is "forward lateral behind the line of scrimmage" but since it would result in a delay of game waiting for the call in the huddle someone said "take a shovel and bury that play." Hence the shovel play!

The name of the pass has been misinterpreted because people hear it orally and thus learn it phonetically instead of by the spelling.

Like the "hook and lateral" play that is sometimes called "hook and ladder."
