It was not close to being the dumbest call in history. A 53 yard FG in those conditions is hardly a no brainer. The field was slippery, the ball was heavy and it is a long, long attempt.
Washington only rushed 4 guys and Romo scrambled right into the pass rusher. He did a poor job executing the play.
I think it is 50/50 on what to do in that situation.
I agree, Romo made it look like a bad call by holding on to the ball way too long.
Drop back, let your guys get down insided the 10 or so on the run and heave it into the end-zone. Maybe we get a catch, or maybe PI, though neither happen very often, it was worth a shot.
He waited too long, (not sure what he was doing) and ended up going down. He looked like he was waiting for a receiver to run a certain route or something. Like I said, just heave it for the EZ and see if you get something lucky to happen. At worst it should have just been a incomplete pass.
Folk was standing on the sidelines telling the ST's coach, "No, I can't make it that far in this weather.", ... otherwise the FG would have been a good call.
I would have hated to have the kick blocked.
I think the long pass was a good call, Romo just went brain dead, and took a sack.
