Dumbest call in the history of pro football

Why in the name of all that is holy and good would you send the offense back out on the field after the onside kick fiasco and take a chance at Romo getting hurt (like he almost did) instead of trying the 53 yard field goal?

It's not like Romo was "on" today and that he had all of his weapons. Only bad things can happen when you pull this kind of stuff.

It was a smart call to get the untimed down, but a field goal attempt would have made much more sense in that situation.

Oh the call itself to take the penalty, yes. I agree but as you said, go for the FG every time in that situation.

There's a reason Wade Phillips hasn't won a playoff game ever.

I really thought the reason to replay that down was to get Romo another completion to pass Danny White for the record and rest him in the 2nd half. I don't think Romo really give a damn about the record so he wanted to go deep for a Hall Mary.

I think..

It was not close to being the dumbest call in history. A 53 yard FG in those conditions is hardly a no brainer. The field was slippery, the ball was heavy and it is a long, long attempt.

Washington only rushed 4 guys and Romo scrambled right into the pass rusher. He did a poor job executing the play.

I think it is 50/50 on what to do in that situation.

I have to admit that was a pretty embarrassing way to end the half IMO. Hell the whole first half was embarrassing.

I'm sorry, the Field Goal gives you the best chance for points there.

I was at the game. It was raining hard at that moment. There was NO way Folk was going to make that FG. The Hail Mary call was the right call. It just didn't work.

That may be the case, but that doesn't make going for a hail mary the worst call in the world.

I suspect the decision to not go for the field goal may have had something to do with Nick Folk. They showed him on the sidelines smiling and shaking his head while talking to a coach just as the offense went on the field. It's complete conjecture, but he may have told the coaches that with the wet field and the downpour, they were better off trying to pass for a TD.

...just a guess, but it makes sense...

That is the dumbest? I thought fielding Julius Jones was the dumbest. ;)

You never saw those quotes come from this keyboard, someone else said that.

But IMO, hail marys are a low low low percentage, and kicking a field goal is a much higher one. Just my opinion though.

Perhaps it was an attempt to not shake Folks confidence. He had already missed a much shorter field goal.

As poor as Folk kicks were looking I doubt Dallas wanted to try a FG and give the Commanders a chance to return the kick or block it. I had no problem with Dallas trying the hail mary just a problem with the execution of it.

Wade doesnt seem to be able to make good quick decisions. How many times have they had to waste a time out this year because he couldnt decide whether or not to go for it on 4th down? Good coaches think about those scenerios a play or 2 in advance.

54 yards is in Folk's range, why not give the guy a shot at a tough long FG in a meaningless game?

I agree, Romo made it look like a bad call by holding on to the ball way too long.

Drop back, let your guys get down insided the 10 or so on the run and heave it into the end-zone. Maybe we get a catch, or maybe PI, though neither happen very often, it was worth a shot.

He waited too long, (not sure what he was doing) and ended up going down. He looked like he was waiting for a receiver to run a certain route or something. Like I said, just heave it for the EZ and see if you get something lucky to happen. At worst it should have just been a incomplete pass.

Folk was standing on the sidelines telling the ST's coach, "No, I can't make it that far in this weather.", ... otherwise the FG would have been a good call.

I would have hated to have the kick blocked.

I think the long pass was a good call, Romo just went brain dead, and took a sack.
