Dware, we all agree, has put up monster numbers for sacks and is a sure fire HOF'r.... and he has done this in an era where all the emphasis has been on protecting the quarterback. He has done this when quarterbacks can take 2 steps left or right and fire the ball in the stands without fear of penalty. He has done this when cornerbacks can barely touch wr's and they come open much quicker than in the past. He has done this when you can hardly touch the qb's and starting qb's are playing more and 2nd stringers are never seeing the field.

It's hard to legitimately argue this player in that era but just for funsie's, I propose that if DWare had played in Reggie White's time even to the time when Micheal Strahan set the record. DWare would be chasing both of those fine pass rusher's records instead of just being great. Oh... and he has never really had any help in this regard. Don't give me almost Anthony either. He is(was) a good run stopper but offenses never had to fear his pass rush like they did Osi, Tuck, Strahan or Smith and Smith or any of the other great pass rushing D's.

Who knows. Total pass attempts are up by a large percentage, so I don't think the rules hurt his totals too badly.

Great point.

I think as it is Ware has been the 2nd most prolific pass rusher in the history of the league. Or maybe 3rd. In terms of total sacks to this point in his career.

With a strong finish people will include him with Reggie White and Bruce Smith.

White had 145 career sacks at age 32, which is the record for that age.

Ware is only 30 sacks behind, and has 29 more games to play before he turns 33.

Is Ware 2nd in terms of sacks at his age?
He needs 5 more sacks in the next 13 games, and he will be.

edit: Allen is still 3 sacks ahead of Ware, so Ware would be 3rd if Allen were to amintain that lead at the end of the season.

Good stuff. I didn't realize Ware was so close to Reggie's pace. He's got a real shot of passing him.
He can get that record for 32-year old's if he stays healthy.

As for total career sacks, if Ware plays to age 36, he'd need to average 15 sacks per season (over six more seasons) to pass Smith.

This is kinda my point.. see what he is doing now and imagine if he wasn't handcuffed by the intentional grounding rule changes and all the other changes to make offense so much easier. Now if only he'd crush the qb's instead of trying not to hurt them when he hits them :D

If Ware spent as much time in the playoffs as Smith and White then he would be even closer to them. Both Smith and White probably averaged 2 games/season more than Ware. With that being said, Smith and White are two of the greatest ever at it and just by the eye test were more dominant.

I might be wrong, but I think career stats are for regular season only. Playoff games aren't included and if they are, it would say(for example) player z has 108 sacks and 119 total including post-season.

I know baseball is completely regular season and I am almost positive it is the same for football.

Yes, and no.

From 2005-2010, Ware was playing in an era when yearly league-leading sack totals were low. The only season from that time period that is represented in the all-time top 30 sack seasons is Ware's 20 sacks in 2008. That season, Ware had 20 sacks when the average total for a team was 32.5.

But since then with more passing, the pendulum has swung back and league-leading sack totals are higher. 2011 and 2012 are represented six times in the top 30 seasons, and the average team total is 37.

30 highest sack totals for a season
2008-12 (9)
2003-07 (2)
1998-02 (4)
1993-97 (1)
1988-92 (10)
1983-87 (10)

The number adds up to 36 seasons because it's top 30+ ties.

Hard to compare differing eras. There are a lot more passes being thrown nowadays, thus a lot more opportunities to sack the QB. Regardless of era, I don't see anyone better than Reggie White.

There's another side to that pass heavy coin; teams are getting the ball out more quickly than they used to. The days of Buddy Ryan feasting off seven step drops and slow developing pass plays are over.
