As reported by Peter King of SI, Dwight Freeney will be a FA. Should the Boys take a looksie since we know we need a serious improvement in the pass rush dept. Though I am keeping in mind that last night he was a no show.

Thoughts, comments?

He makes everyone on the Dline a better player, I would love to see him wearing a star but that is probably just wishful thinking. He my favorite DE to watch since Haley retired.

Wow...he is going to be EXPENSIVE!!! I don't know...I think the Boys have other priorities first like OL, LB, FS (if Henry doesn't move over), CB (if Henry does move over), and then DT. I see another DE being after all these.

Then again, if the Boys drafted well, I could see them signing two big FA like Samuels and Freeney.

Freeney isn't going anywhere. At the very least, he'll be franchised. However, the Colts are already talking with Manning about restructuring his contract to free up room for Freeney. One thing about the Colts people need to remember, you can't look at their cap number. Manning can move money around at any time to free up cap space. Freeney will never hit the open market.

The Colts GM is already on record saying that Freeney will NOT be leaving the colts. If they can't get a contract worked out by the start of fA, then the Team will Tag him.

Nope. People can just get the idea of him as anything other than a Colt, out of their minds. No way Indy lets him get away.

I don't know where we would play him-- and "no", I'm not being a wise-guy.

Not sure how he would like being in Dallas. I can't remember the last time I saw a Dallas d-lineman use any kind of rush move other than a straight bull-rush. Maybe with Zimmer gone, they wouldn't "teach" him that spin-move of his is bad.

Seriously - teams spend years finding guys who can get pressure like he does.

Well I think the majority knows he will not be leaving the colts and even if they franchise we would not give up the picks.

However either you are joking about your statement or I am just confused on how you would not know where we would play him.

Where would you play him so that his weak game against run wouldn't hurt the rest of the defense?

I think it's a legit question.

Right now I think Ware is a better all around player than Freeney.

Freeney can't play linebacker.

Freeney can't play DE in the 3-4.

Freeney can't play the strong-side DE in a 4-3.

About all he could play is what he's playing now and that's the weakside DE in a 4-3... and guess what? That's Ware's position if we go to a 4-3.

I dunno Brain, maybe you've got a touch of "Nors" today and you're thinking we can play him at FS and TE on occasion! :laugh2:

How do you know he can't play LB in a 3-4?

How do you know he can't play strong side DE in a 4-3?

Now it may not be ideal.
I imagine the man gets doubled or triple teamed more than he ever sees one on one matchups.

I think if Ware can do it...not sure why Freeney could not (LB). I also don't see why they could not be book end 4-3 DEs as long as you rotate from time to time and get good LB play supporting him.

I think he is the type of player that can play on any defense if you work it out hard enough.

He has been one of the few guys on Defense for the colts for some time so I don't see how he could not do it on a team that has better players.

I don't know either. We'd get him only if we went to a 4-3 and then we'd have two RDE's in Freeny and Ware. Which one of those two would we move over to LDE and let them take on a RT and a TE in the running game? Neither is really suited to do so.

Ware isn't a 4-3 OLB, so in order for us to get our good out of him in a 4-3, he'd need to play Haley's old position of RDE. That happens to be Freeny's position too. Neither one of those guys need to be on the strong side.

People need to just forget about Freeny already.

In a 3-4, I would hate to have to pay Freeny the kind of money that he'll command on the open market and then project him to OLB opposite Ware. Who know's if he can play OLB? I don't think he's really made for that. Way too much money to take that kind of chance on, IMO, even if the Colts did magically let him get away.

I didn't see this post when I just wrote mine... but that's exactly what I was saying. Freeny is a weakside DE in a 4-3 and that's it. If we do switch to a 4-3, then we already have a pro bowler at that position in Ware.

We'd be stupid to spend a lot on Freeny.

I don't know if Dallas can afford another big-ticket FA on defense.

Of course they can. They've got plenty of cap space, and they may end up with even more if one or more guys like Rivera, Owens, Bledsoe, or Fabini get cut loose. It's very tough to get into cap trouble without a highly paid QB or a highly paid RB.

The question is whether the Joneses think Freeney, or anyone else, is worth the money he'd demand and whether he'd fit the system the team wants to run.

Yeah, I'm sure Freeney would just jump at the chance to trash everything he's learned over the last few years and become a linebacker!

Oh-come'on Brain you can do better than that...

You just don't move players around willy-nilly and expect a high level of performance.

Yeah, let's put Freeney in a position where he'd now have coverage responsibilities.

And as far as being a strong-side DE in a 4-3... I say no way. Here's a man that's shorter than I am weighing about 260lbs having to fight through both the OT and the TE on running plays??? BEEEPPPPP.... Wrong answer Brain.

IF we were going to a 4-3 AND didn't have Ware I would agree that Freeney would be a good addition.

But right now he'd be nothing more than another round peg in a square hole. We have enough issues on this defense trying to cover-up for an overpriced SS who can't play his position adequately. At some point lets stop monkeying around and use a scheme that fits the talent we have without having to "shoe-horn" people into rolls and responsibilities that doesn't maximize their performance. And putting Freeney at LB or as a strong-side DE in the 4-3 isn't maximizing his performance.
