How do you know he can't play LB in a 3-4?
How do you know he can't play strong side DE in a 4-3?
Now it may not be ideal.
I imagine the man gets doubled or triple teamed more than he ever sees one on one matchups.
I think if Ware can do it...not sure why Freeney could not (LB). I also don't see why they could not be book end 4-3 DEs as long as you rotate from time to time and get good LB play supporting him.
I think he is the type of player that can play on any defense if you work it out hard enough.
He has been one of the few guys on Defense for the colts for some time so I don't see how he could not do it on a team that has better players.
Yeah, I'm sure Freeney would just jump at the chance to trash everything he's learned over the last few years and become a linebacker!
Oh-come'on Brain you can do better than that...
You just don't move players around willy-nilly and expect a high level of performance.
Yeah, let's put Freeney in a position where he'd now have coverage responsibilities.
And as far as being a strong-side DE in a 4-3... I say no way. Here's a man that's shorter than I am weighing about 260lbs having to fight through both the OT and the TE on running plays??? BEEEPPPPP.... Wrong answer Brain.
IF we were going to a 4-3 AND didn't have Ware I would agree that Freeney would be a good addition.
But right now he'd be nothing more than another round peg in a square hole. We have enough issues on this defense trying to cover-up for an overpriced SS who can't play his position adequately. At some point lets stop monkeying around and use a scheme that fits the talent we have without having to "shoe-horn" people into rolls and responsibilities that doesn't maximize their performance. And putting Freeney at LB or as a strong-side DE in the 4-3 isn't maximizing his performance.
