Chuck Howley, linebacker

The Cowboys have a few options, but Howley, a six-time Pro Bowler, five-time All Pro and one-time Super Bowl MVP, has the most on his side.

Howley was ahead of his time as a terrific athlete for the position, which gave him a modern-like edge in covering backs and receivers. He also was prolific against the run and getting to the quarterback.

Howley actually has a case as the biggest Hall of Fame snub from any team, period.

I'm glad to see Sterling Sharpe on this list. As much as I hate the Packers, he was a phenomenal player. Like Shannon said in his HOF speech, 'I'm probably the only guy in the Hall that can say I'm the second best football player in my own family.'

I wanna see Woodson, Ware (when eligible), and Howley in the HOF in the next 5 years.

Losing games to the 60s Packers and we lost the Super Bowl he was named MVP in. Pretty simple to figure why he’s not in. The Cowboys kept coming up short in the big games and it kept several players out of the Hall of Fame.

Dick Butkus played in the same era. He also had 5 all-pro seasons. The Bears sucked during those years, but it didn't keep him out of the HoF.

Also if Greg Hardy doesn't make the COWBOYS Hall of Fame I will cut off my two centimeter peter.
If you really think about it, your problem has already been solved.

I would think the 5 Time All Pro alone should do it.

Though there are a few guys with 6.

The biggest snub looks like Alan Faneca. Who? Never heard of him. But 6 All Pro + 3 more Pro Bowls. And the guy only missed 2 games in 13 years. Guess LG just aint a sexy spot.

Jim Tyre at T had 6 All Pro plus 4 more Pro Bowls.

Faneca is just a temporary snub due to the current logjam at OL that is working itself through. He will probably go in next.

Butkus was a legendary player one of the greatest at his position. Howley wasn’t as good as Butkus. Not even close! Comparing Howley with Butkus is silly. Despite that the Bears sucked he stood out. The Bears were so bad they never made the playoffs during Butkus’ career but he still made an impact. Name all the linebackers during Butkus’s era that were better than him. Jim Brown said Butkus was the best defensive player he ever faced.

Not really, the knees for Butkus went out pretty early in his career. He was a force up front and delivered a load. Howley was much more mobile. Different types of linebackers...both good.

I’m not about to waste my time in a Howley vs Butkus debate. LOL Butkus was one of the greats of all time. Go compare Butkus’ highlight reel with Howley’s.

Agree, he wasn't the hitter that DB was but this guy was a beast and to be named the MVP in a losing SB game, that says it all. Still can't believe the boys lost that game though.

I didn't say Howley was as good as Butkus. I merely mentioned that both were 5 time all-pro players. You say they hold it against Howley that Dallas finished 2nd a few times during his career(he also has a Superbowl ring). They don't hold it against Butkus that his teams never even made the post season and they shouldn't. Same for Howley. His team success shouldn't impact what the player brought to the game. He was good. Darn good. This list of 5 time all-pro players not named to the HoF is very small.

You're making a comparison between the two players. It's pretty obvious to any knowledgeable football fan why Butkus was a first ballot HOF player and considered by many as one of the top 10 greatest players of all time. He was a diamond amongst trash. Howley wasn't nearly the player Butkus was which is one reason he's still not in the HOF and may never get in. Players are judged amongst their peers who played the same position during the same era. Dave Robinson LB for the 60s Packers had similar stats that Howley had but he was elected to the HOF in 2013 because his teams won championships and beat the Cowboys in a couple of title games. Howley wasn't a diamond amongst trash he had many good defensive players around him Including Lilly, Refro, Cornell Green and Lee Roy Jordan. Howley didn't bring to the game was Butkus did, not even close! Dick Butkus is a household name for a reason. Howley was an excellent player but he was no Butkus. Howley was on par with Dave Robinson. The Cowboys repeatedly coming up short especially against the Packers hurt Howley's HOF chances. The 70s Cowboys would have had more HOF players inducted than the 70s Steelers had the Cowboys not lost those two Super Bowls to Pittsburgh.

Darren Woodson

Its criminal Dawkins got in before him
I can't complain, Dawkins was a beast, and almost all his stats when you compare his time in Philly against Woodson's time here surpass Woodson's. Six times All-NFL, nine times all-pro. Only player in NFL history with 25 sacks, 25 ints, and 25 forced fumbles. He might be the hardest hitter of them all--his 42 forced fumbles are more than Reed, Polamalu, Lynch and Harrison combined. Think about that. Dawkins was a beast. I know he was an Eagle for most of his career, but I appreciate good, hard hitting football. He played 183 games with the Eagles, where Woodson played 178 with the Boys. Dawkins stats are practically better across the board. He brought it every game. No need to disparage him. He deserved his induction. Woodson will get there one day too.
