The Eagles are desperate, but they are also disgustingly cheap.

They wouldn't pay the price for Javon Walker. And it doesn't appear they will try to get Ashley Lelie.

Which is fine with me.:)

considering somebody that has not played since the 10th grade is DESPERATION.

Wanting to take a look at a guy with world class speed without using a draft pick to look at him is a low risk high reward situation. If the guy proves to be nothing you lose nothing.

Any team that wants to pick up a hot shot prospect is now desperate? What if the boys were looking at this guy, would we be desperate. Maybe some would read into that that the boys are not confident they can pacify el dorado all 3 years and are hedging their bets?

Just cause a team is exploring an option does not make them desperate. Any time you can get a player that could turn out to be a steal, you do it regardless of whos on the team.
the guy is 24 and has not played football since the 10th grade. Seeing how Philty has a HUGE need at the position this guy is going to play, yeah, I would qualify this as an act of deperation.

Well Jerry said he was deperate which is why we signed TO. We do so with a certain amont of risk. Philly is looking at a guy who if he shows nothing what did they lose? Nothing. Yet if he can show he can play then you got a player with outstanding speed.

Thank you, Burmafrd. There is some sense to this board.

And might I add "dumb" to the list of adjectives to describe this move.

I would still call it desperate. The same as taking Carter in the 2nd after trading down and then back up to grab him.

Taking Hutchinson when we did was also an act of deperation.

Lets kill the myth that speeds equates to a good WR. Hands are probaly the best atribute of a good WR followed by route running as a close 2nd.

The defense gives Randall Williams and Alexander Wright as exhibits A and B.

What you say is correct to a certain extent, but the move is still a desperate move to try to solve a void at KR/WR for the E-girls.

As I said earlier, the risk factor in whomever the E-girls choose to fill their void does nothing to mitigate the desperation of this move. The organization is desperate to find a fix.

Gatlin's agent, Renaldo Nehemiah, said Thursday the Eagles have made several inquiries the last three weeks to see if his client was interested in playing football. But Gatlin has only one summer plan: a long-anticipated race with Powell in a matchup between the two 100-meter world-record holders.

Nehemiah said the Eagles have left phone messages and sent e-mails to him about Gatlin.

The Eagles are desperate for a receiver and kickoff returner.

Though Nehemiah knows the temptation of playing in the NFL, he has no plans to return the Eagles' calls and mentioned the topic to Gatlin only in passing..

Webster Online Dictionary said:
defines desperate as "involving or employing extreme measures in an attempt to escape defeat or frustration "

conversely it defines prudence as "caution or circumspection as to danger or risk"

All in all they are deperately seeking helping at the WR position while utilizing a great deal of prudence in doing so. :)

Dough Boy was addressing the E-girls desperation to fill a hole at a position.

Doomsday101 you are addressing something different. You are talking about the risk/reward factor in signing a player.

The two are independent of each other.

Well I would consider it a move of desperation had they paid out big money to get him taking a look at a player finding out if he has an interest in playing with really no risk involved I think is just covering your bases.

Actually, it was Neimiah I believe. Either way, there are lots of guys from track and field who have come over. Some have had success, most have not. "Lamb" Jones of the Jets years back, Harper was a track guy. How many DBs are playing in the NFL right now who were track guys including our own Newman? Track guy playing football, football player running track, it doesn't really matter. There is huge money in track if your good. Bigger then football probably. The Eagles are desperate but everybody knows there thin at WR. There doing the smart thing. There turning over every rock. Hey, it was not so long ago that we were doing this for guys as well. It happens.

I actually thought that Gatlin had played football at Tennessee but I could wrong. That too happens. Either way, it should be an interesting season. I can see the Eagles doing a complete 180 this year and actually going way more to the run then they have in past years. I guess we will see.

Just how are they going to run? What have they got they can rely on?

The E-girls are indeed desperate. The problem isn't with college football players who also ran track. For me, the issue is filling the need with players who have speed and only 10th grade football experience.

As I've been saying in previous posts, all NFL teams then should be bringing to camp MLB pitchers as QBs, big, strong wrestlers as linemen, guys with XL hands as WRs, the USA 4x100 relay sprint team as RBs and WRs. With the caveat that all of them have little to no football experience.

But teams don't. Why? Because they're not as foolishly desperate as the E-girls.

Perhaps but then again, maybe it's because the 4x100 relay team makes more money running around the track then it does struggling to make a special teams spot on a Pro Football team. Don't kid yourself. There are plenty of guys who get try outs who have the extra large hands or the sprinters speed or the big time fast ball. Why do you think we hold open tryouts for prospects in the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metro area every year?

It has already been acknowledged that the Eagles are desperate at WR. That's kinda the point. Stupid is not considering an athlete like this one to see if there is a possability. Stupid is not looking at every possability no matter how slim. It's a process and it will likely be a painful one for Philly at WR for awhile. We, of all people, should be very familiar with this pain. The Eagles just drafted Jeremy Bloom, an Olympic Skier, this past April. He was a 5th round pick and it was not a reach. Michael Carter was an Olympic Shot Putter who also happened to be a pretty good Nose Tackle in the NFL. Played his HS ball right there in Dallas and his College ball at SMU I believe. I mean, it does happen and it's not as if there isn't a history of limited success in this approach so yeah, maybe your right. Maybe every team in the NFL should be signing pitchers or Olympic Wrestlers or whatever.

good point, that's probably why he isn't interested in returning to football

I don't have a problem if the athlete has played college football or something close to that. I stated that the problem lies with athletes such as MLB pitchers, Olympians, wrestlers, etc. who have scant football experience. That would include Gatlin since he last played football in the 10th grade when he was 15 yrs old.

I'm all for trying to discover diamonds in the rough, but the proverbial "turn over every stone" is more fiction than it is fact. As is "looking at every possibility no matter how slim". There needs to be some evidence that the athlete can play or else every unsuccessful tryout who has limited to no football experience, such as Gatlin, will waste the team's time and money, prevent other potential players with more football experience and perhaps a better chance of making the team from being discovered, and discourage fans.

Gatlin would be a low-risk move, though, for sure. In the E-girls case, since they have that void at KR/WR, it's a desperate, low-risk move that isn't going anywhere.
