You don't need a great defense, but typically it's got to be very good at not allowing points.
From 1983 to 2005, no team that *made it to* the Super Bowl finished outside the top 8 in points allowed.
In 2006, the Colts broke that streak, but that's when Bob Sanders was injured up until right before the playoffs. 2007 the G-Men made it while finishing outside the top 8, but they were also the biggest underdogs in SB history. 2008 the Cardinals made finishing outside the top 8. While the Colts didn't have a stupendous defense in '09, the did finish in the top 8 in points allowed. However, the Saints did not (20th).
Perhaps the game is starting to change, but I'd be a little averse to claiming that right now. I still think the defense has to do a pretty good job of holding teams from scoring points, unless they have a really good offense of their own.
