NEW YORK - Eagles defensive tackle LaJuan Ramsey and Washington Commanders safety LaRon Landry were fined one game check each Monday by the NFL for unnecessary roughness for hits with the helmet.

Ramsey was fined $21,176 for spearing Dallas Cowboys running back Julius Jones in a Sunday night game won by the Cowboys, 38-17.

Landry was fined $16,764 for roughing the passer, specifically making helmet-to-helmet contact with New York Jets quarterback Kellen Clemens on Sunday.

Landry previously was fined $7,500 for two unnecessary roughness violations on Oct. 21 against Arizona. Ramsey was fined $5,000 on Oct. 14 for roughing the passer against the Jets.

NFL director of football operations Gene Washington issued the fines, citing the rule that says:
"... using any part of a players helmet (including the top/crown and forehead/hairline parts) or facemask to butt, spear, or ram an opponent violently or unnecessarily; although such violent or unnecessary use of the helmet is impermissible against any opponent, game officials will give special attention in administering this rule to protect those players who are in virtually defenseless postures."

Washington emphasized to both players that future infractions of this type can lead to increased disciplinary action up to and including a suspension.

That was my initial guess, 20K...Seems light considering what could've happened.

What a clown...I hate 'hoping' for someone to have an injury but it couldn't happen to a better guy if and when he gets injured himself...What goes around, comes around

They just said Mikell got fined too for his hit on Witten.

This isn't the first time this year multiple Eagles defenders have been fined for PFs in the SAME game. And FWIW too-you saw the end of the Giants game when Eagles defenders were throwing punches at the Giants OL.

Reid has obviously lost control of his team.

Damn, Landry is 8 games into his career and has already been fined twice and given a warning about a possible suspension next time. He is going to get a rep as a dirty player. I guess Taylor is rubbing off on him!

Wasn't he the same dude that knocked out the QB last week with a cheap shot?

Is that a percentage fine or something?

How do they come up with $21,176 and $16,764? They should throw in some change. $21,176.95 + tax. Available for three easy payments of $7,058.98.

According to Mickey, they were fined one game check. They'll be playing for free next week.

Eagles Notes | Helmet-to-helmet hit nets Ramsey NFL fine

Eagles Notes
It didn't take long for the NFL to punish LaJuan Ramsey, and the fine was every bit as hefty as the Eagles' 300-pound defensive tackle.

The league announced yesterday that NFL director of football operations Gene Washington had penalized Ramsey one game check - $21,176 - for his helmet-to-helmet hit on running back Julius Jones midway through the third quarter of the Eagles' lopsided loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night.

Head coach Andy Reid said he talked to his second-year defensive tackle about the play, which drew a 15-yard penalty for unnecessary roughness.

"I said something to him on the field, and I've gone back and looked at it on film," Reid said. "The thing he was doing was he was trying hard to get to that spot and get there fast. He tried to make something happen. He ended up being late by a tick, and you don't do that. You can't do that part, but . . . at least he was trying to get there and hustle and be part of that play."

Although the helmet-to-helmet part of the hit deserved a fine, it's questionable whether Jones was already down when Ramsey came crashing in headfirst. The whistle had not blown, and the various replay angles show that Jones had not made contact with the ground before Ramsey hit him and tried to yank the football away.

In his letter to Ramsey, Washington warned that future infractions could lead to increased disciplinary action up to and including a suspension. The league also revealed in its release that Ramsey was previously fined $5,000 for what the league determined was an overly violent hit on New York Jets quarterback Chad Pennington in the Oct. 14 win at the Meadowlands. Ramsey was not penalized for that play.

Injury update
Reid said that the MRI examination of cornerback Lito Sheppard's sprained left knee looked "normal" and that "he just has some soreness there."

Sheppard, who missed four games earlier this season because of a sprained knee, left Sunday night's game in the third quarter and did not return. Reid, however, said he thought Sheppard would be able to play Sunday when the Eagles travel to Landover, Md., for a game against the Washington Commanders.

Safety Sean Considine played sparingly in the fourth quarter because of a shoulder sprain and was scheduled for an MRI examination yesterday. A shoulder injury in 2005 ended Considine's season.

Reid also said that tackle Jon Runyan, who has played the last three games with a fractured tailbone, remains sore but should be able to continue playing.

Nice gesture
The Eagles invited the family of slain Philadelphia police officer Chuck Cassidy to Sunday night's game against the Cowboys, and Reid said he had a conversation with the officer's son, John.
"That's a tough situation for a young man to be in," Reid said. "He goes to Father Judge High School, and he's a lacrosse player. [Reid talked to the teen] just so he knew somebody was kind of in his corner there, when his father passed. I gave him an opportunity if he needed somebody to talk to, he could talk. It was no more than that."

Reid said John Cassidy asked if the Eagles' head coach was doing all right after watching his two eldest sons - Garrett and Britt - being sentenced to jail last week.

"Actually, John, this shows what kind of kid he is: He was asking me if I was OK with my situation," Reid said. "He's a good kid, and he's in a tough spot right now. But he's going to hang tough and be very strong for everybody around him."

Extra points
Reid was asked if thought major changes need to be made in the second half of the season if the Eagles are to recover from their 3-5 start. "Here's what I think: Everybody needs to pick up their game, all the way around. I'm talking about coaches and players, everybody do their job a little bit better. It's easy to point the finger at one guy. But I don't think that's where we're at right now." . . . Brian Westbrook's 14 receptions tied a single-game franchise record set by Don Looney on Dec. 1, 1940. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Westbrook's 14 catches tied the fourth-highest total by a running back in NFL history and were the most since Marshall Faulk caught 14 passes at Denver on Sept. 8, 2002. The NFL record for receptions in a game by a running back was set by the Jets' Clark Gaines, who caught 17 passes Sept. 21, 1980.

Ramsey was fined the $21k and Landry $16,764. How is Landry only making $16k a game being such a high pick?
