The Patriots traded disappointing wide receiver Bethel Johnson to the New Orleans Saints for defensive tackle Johnathan Sullivan on Monday.

One of the oldest clichés regarding underachieving players involves a change of scenery. With that in mind, the Patriots and the New Orleans Saints decided to exchange one disappointment for another Monday afternoon when wide receiver Bethel Johnson was shipped to the Saints for defensive tackle Johnathan Sullivan.
The trade is pending league approval, which could happen as early as Tuesday. According to Patriots executive director of media relations Stacey James, an official press release will be issued once the deal is approved.
Both players were selected in 2003 – Sullivan in the first round (sixth overall) and Johnson in the second – and neither has lived up to his billing. The Saints actually traded up to get Sullivan, who was a teammate of Richard Seymour at Georgia, but the 6-3, 328-pounder has been ineffective during his three seasons.
The Saints have been upset with his poor conditioning in the past, and during their recently completed mini-camp he struggled with the heat despite being 20 pounds lighter than previous offseasons. In 2004, he was inactive for seven of New Orleans’ final eight games despite being healthy. In 36 career games, Sullivan managed just 1.5 sacks and 77 tackles.
The seven-year deal Sullivan signed as a rookie that ran through 2009 with salaries of roughly $689,000 for 2006, $901,000 in 2007, $1.24 million in 2008 and $1.45 million in 2009. According to ESPN.com the final two years of the rookie deal were voided. Also, several of the other trades the Patriots have made in recent seasons have involved renegotiations, which could alter some of those dollar amounts.

Johnson, the Patriots second-round pick in 2003, came into the league with worlds of talent but never put it together in New England. He burst on the scene as a dynamic kick returner as a rookie, leading the AFC with a 28.2-yard average that included a 92-yard touchdown and several other big returns.
But he never cracked the receiving rotation during his three years. His world-class speed evidently couldn’t overcome his lack of polish as a route-runner and his seeming unwillingness to adapt to the different receiver spots. He was a healthy scratch three times last year and once in 2004.
In his three seasons, Johnson had just 30 catches for 450 yards and four touchdowns, but 16 of those receptions came in his rookie season. Johnson spoke recently about his inability to establish himself in Bill Belichick’s offense.
“It probably has to be that way,” Johnson said recently when asked if the end of his time here could be near. “It probably had to be that way, I don’t know. I don’t know if that will be the case, but I don’t know. That’s the thing in this business, you never know.”

Another masterful signing in Philadelphia.

I'm sure Belichick and Co. just missed the boat on this guy.

Better tell Spadaro that Johnson also "played" in New Orleans!

:lmao:

As usual Hos, your words ring with wisdom. Stallworth is a weapon for us, and under the strong arm of McNabb he could really become an asset. No doubt we could do worse. NE already got Welker, I think they were put off by Stallworth being in rehab. But I think Stallworth could do worse in getting picked up by another franchise also.

I think it's going to be a mutual arrangement that the Eagles and Stallworth will agree to.
Signed paperwork is signed paperwork. Who knows how that will turn out?

New England is rightly turned off by the negative pub.

Thanks stasheroo ...my, my ...you've changed lately. That's a good review of what Johnson has Been doing in Minnesota and New Orleans - seriously!

But None of that has anything to do with what Johnson (a consistently healthy) Johnson will do in the Eagles camp. Different trainers, coaches, team and QB could make a world of difference. I'm not so sure he's going to be used exclusively as a WR. His speed is exactly what we Need to compensate for a slow and butterfingers former Eagles player named Reno Mahe.

I'm up for seeing what he and Bloom can do on the returns.

Granted the ink is probably drying as we speak; nothing can be done at this point ...but as you well know, negative pub doesn't always turn off a Franchise.

I'll tell you what he did in both Minnesota and New Orleans - nothing - look it up.

Out come the green glasses!

I'm sure the Eagles will bring out the best in this "diamond in the rough".

So does Johnson's signing mean that "the skier" will be back on the slopes?

He was the answer last year.

Once again, a mediocre player gets talked up because the Eagles signed him.

I wasn't going to put this out there, but oh well, since you asked ...

Most of us are excited about McNabb coming back healthy, and a healthy Javon Kearse re-joining the Eagles Defensive team ...

Personally, I'd like to see an acquisition for a strong, young healthy Linebacker to fortify Our defense against the run. In 2006, it appeared as though the Eagles could not stop any opponents ground game. Our SS/FS positions was fair to good, but our secondary CBs need tweaking. Top that with a beast-type RB like Bettis (when he played) and we'd be set!

That's how I see it.

Not sure why this thread is even two pages long. The Eagles are not counting on him to be a starter or anything, just possible depth and see if he has anything at camp.

I'm not saying none of that, but whatever we did last year worked to get us back up on top of the NFC-East again. If Johnson can make a seam in a few wrinkles on opponent team special team defenses ...I'd say it would be money well spent.

I'd rather the Eagles spend a few dollars trying to strengthen up our Special Teams return efforts than to go out and spend top dollar on a premadona WR that hasn't been anything but typical. Do the math ...10 Million reasons:rolleyes:

What do you mean he has not done "nothing", stasheroo?

Check these stats out...from 2003 to 2006 he has 4 receiving TD's, one per year! Whoo-hoo, he's smoking now!

How about this? From 2003 to 2006 he has 2 kick return TD's, one every other year! Talk about hot! Man....

He has no punt returns in those same years for TD's...zero in four years! Now, that is impressive!

In 2003 and 2004 he did return a 92 and a 93 yard kick return for a TD each, but, after that...nothing...

I say this guy is going to put the eagles over the top! (the top of what, I have no clue)...

Maybe McBrokeLeg can git him a ball or two? Well, that is if he can reach down towards the ground to try and catch it...

All in all, a good signing by the eagles...! Whoo-whoo, SuperBowl here they come! What a "special teamer" this guy is!!

:laugh2:

Finally, the truth shows itself once again!

I knew it was just a matter of time.

Too bad that the quarterback who led the Eagles there got the shaft - better hope McFatty doesn't get hurt yet again.

The Eagles always spend just "a few dollars" - very few.

That's why they've never won anything and never will.

:trophy:

Save the weak attempted shots at Owens - he only led the league in receiving touchdowns despite being injured.

And despite injury, he's light-years better than anything the Eagles have.

#1-you didnt answer my questions
#2-Dont try to smash T.O.-you dont have to worry about him anymore-just worry about freddie mitchell, greg lewis, hank baskett, reggie brown(a great #2 reciever if u ask me) and whatever bargain basement recievers you have this year..... i am happy to have T.O.

Heres another question..Whos McFatt gonna blame this year when something goes wrong??? 2 years ago its T.O., last year Garcia... whos next....

It does appears Stallworth is gone!
That will be a big loss for their offense.

They have to miss his speed, but didn't he only catch 38 passes? Regardless, in my opinion he was a very good number 2 in their offense. He's got a world of potential if the guy could stay healthy, and be more consistent catching the ball.

Wouldn't shock me if he doesn't return to Philly though. Philly is known not to pay big money to guys that when talked about you hear if if if.

Dayam ...he's just barely out of being a rookie. He was injured in 2006, But he'll be healthy in 2007. Don't count this guy out yet.

Recovered a fumble in the 4th quarter at NO (1/13-NFC-D)
Notched a sack on Cowboys QB Tony Romo at Dal. (12/25)
Posted 1.0 sack on Titans QB Vince Young vs. Ten. (11/19)
Notched 2.0 sacks on Cowboys QB Drew Bledsoe, 1 forced fumble, 2 hurries and 8 tackles, including a team-high 3 tackles for a loss vs. Dal. (10/8)
Recovered a fumble on the Packers 6-yard line vs. GB (10/2). The turnover led to an Eagles TD (McNabb 5-yard rush) that put the Eagles up 7-3 in the first quarter
Recorded his first sack and forced fumble as an Eagle, bringing down 49ers QB Alex Smith for a 7-yard loss at SF (9/24). Also contributed three tackles, two QB pressures, and one pass defensed

He's got to improve, but he's worth keeping

You're starting to worry me a little stasheroo. For example ...show me something that show T.O. as leading the league in anything legitimate ...Lol!

In the interim ...give me the link for the title you boast!
