There's nothing in the rules against that tho. If you get a pick in the end zone you can run out the back of the end zone, it has the same effect as taking a knee. You get the ball at the 20 yard line I.e. a touchback.

I guess because possession starts in the end zone.

I remember on Tecmo Super Bowl, if you received the KO and ran out of the side of the end zone, it was a safety.

I don't think you understand what I'm saying. If a player steps out of the end zone into the field then backs up into the end zone again and is tackled then it is a safety. That's what happened in the scenarios you're talking about

I understand what you are saying now. That still doesn't apply in my opinion. The ball is still live when a defender intercepts a pass in the endzone. If the defender gives himself up by taking a knee or falling to the ground then it is a touchback. If he tries to advance the ball, but gets tackled before the ball is fully across the goal line it is a safety. It happens very rarely, but I have seen it occur. I've never seen a defender purposely run out the back of the endzone in that situation. The right call may indeed be a touchback, but NFL refs do make mistakes. I wouldn't be surprised if they did on this play.

In that situation, taking a knee is the exact same thing as going out of the back of the endzone.

In order for it to be a safety the defender has to have crossed the goaline, then gone back in of their own power I.e trying to juke somebody otherwise forward progress would give them the ball on the 1 yard line. I would hope no referee would be crazy enough to call a safety on a defender who never left the end zone and just walked backwards out of bounds. That is an entry level call that no professional should mess up.

ESPN Stats and Information

Jeff Fisher has become the third coach to lose 160 games in NFL history. He is now five shy of Dan Reeves for the most in NFL history.
He(Fisher) has nothing to work with at the QB position this year, unfortunately a good coach is showing the possibilities with Sam Bradford in Minny and that reflects on Fisher.

Maybe it's a judgement call. If he runs out of bounds of his own volition, then it's a touchback. If he attempts to advance the ball and gets tackled, it's a safety? I'd like to see the hard rule on this...

If he attempts to advance it and gets tackled that's not enough for a safety. He has to completely make it out of the goaline back into the field of play, then head back into the goaline only then will a tackle result in a safety. The key here is that they have to leave the end zone completely and go back in, in order to be penalized with a safety. Its the same reason why a kick returner can't come out of the end zone then decide to turn back around and go back into the end zone to take a knee. That would result in a safety
