They gave up a first round pick and 1/7th of their cap space for Brown. Including the cap hit it was one of the most expensive trades in history.

Not Brown, but others. And like all deals, it'll look good in two years. And they already had other 1st round picks due to other trades, so giving a first rounder you can spare for a known guaranteed entity is better than a mid to late round pick. They just figure out how to get good players, but they still need the most important position, and its the reason we still have a good change to win the East.
