Eatman: Cowboys Have Interest in Tank Johnson

From Nick Eatman's article that just came out:

Exploring Options
Remi Ayodele wasn't the only nose tackle on the Cowboys' radar, but his familiarity with the defense was an overriding factor.

The team did have some interest in a few veteran tackles and even have some minimal interest in former Bears tackle Tank Johnson, who is currently serving an eight-game suspension for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy.

Although Johnson is not currently with an NFL team after the Bears released him on June 25, the eight-game suspension has already begun.

Johnson, a second-round pick of the Bears in 2004, had played a key role for a defense that has become one of the NFL's best. While Chicago has run a 4-3 scheme, Johnson (6-3, 300) is big enough to play nose tackle in the Cowboys' 3-4 scheme.

However, Johnson's off-field incidents are likely the reason other clubs have shied away from signing him. Johnson has had various run-ins with the law in the last three years, including a 45-day jail sentence for a weapons charge.
That's DC.com reporting that we have interest in Tank, minimal as it may be.

There's some smoke here, fellas.

Awesome.

The catastrophic collapse and imminent heart attack of a few members will be entertaining.

Doubtful, Ayodele was just resigned...#92.

I doubt even if that didn't happen, that Dallas would sign Tank now, he's serving 7 more games of suspension, that wouldn't make any sense

and you can release and sign players during the season

In order to sign Tank, they'd have to release someone...Who would that be now that Ayodele is on board?

It's not gonna happen.

Engel said this morning that there was interest, too. And FWIW, Nate Newton said we should bring him in because Ratliff was so undersized and such a good nickel rusher.

I dunno. I hate the bad character guys, but maybe this team is to the point that it could handle one or two. Tank is awfully talented. I have to admit, I'd be in favor of signing him... What a late-season boost he'd provide. Give us Ellis, Newman, and Tank on D to add to the offense we have, and we could really do something.

Wouldn't they only have to release Ayodele for a day, at least until the suspension is up?

PFT reported interest as well. That's 3 different sources.

ahem, again, the Cowboys aren't' going to sign him now, they may not ever, but it won't be because Remi Ayodele is on the roster

It would probably come down to how much Wade likes Ratliff with Ayodele as his backup this year. If Wade really likes Ratliff, he could be designated as Ferguson's successor some day. On other hand, Wade might prefer Tank as Ferguson's eventual successor with Ratliff remaining as a much valued backup DE/DT.

If they signed him now, they wouldn't have to release anyone until they activate him when his suspension is over.

Why even sign him right now? Just wait until the suspension is up.

I agree, I was just saying......someone was concerned about signing him and releasing a player.

The only reason I would see for signing him now is if they really want him and are concerned some other team will take him, and also so that Tank can start learning the playbook and his responsiblities.

Other than that, just wait.

Not that I'm for the signing, but conceivably...

They wouldn't have to pay him either right? ( for the suspension) Maybe all we'd be out is a small SB -- then if it didn't work out, see ya.
