Eberflus is McDaniels' top choice for DC

Rod Marinelli gonna screw rhis up too.....

It reminds me of when Bill Parcells stayed here one year after Sean Peyton was lured away for New Orleans. If Marinelli comes back for 1 year and then retires he actually is selfish if Eberflus would actually stay here as our D coordinator.

McDaniels and Patricia are smart. Both going to teams where they have established good QB's. Eli and a draft pick and the NY media doesn't sound enticing to me!

Eli has been putrid it’s not a great situation, yes the draft pick is good and there is some good young piece to build around, but I think Eli is about done.

McDaniels was terrible as HC of the Broncos. He made some very poor decisions but hiring Eberflus would be a good one this time.

To be honest, I wouldn't be the end of the world if Marenelli retired after Eberflus took the Colts job. I want a change on the defensive side of the ball, and Eberflus may not be as aggressive as I want in a DCoordinator. We have some real players on the D-line, and I think with a few players here and there and a more attacking style, we could be real good. If that happened, a couple of guys I'd like to look at

Chris Wilson, DLine coach, Eagles:
Was Leonard Williams and Fletcher Cox's position coach in college, has been in the NFL for 2 years, so this may be a bit of a jump for him, but has 23 years of collegiate experience . Did a minority internship with us in 1995.
Andre Patterson, DLine coach, Vikings: Has 14 years NFL experience, has very little coordinator experience, but has lead a strong unit in Minnesota. Everson Griffen took off under his tutelage, and guy Danielle Hunter developed very nicely under him. Coached here during the Campo years fwiw.

I don't know if anyone would want to join this shaky situation, but some of the talent should be intriguing.

My first choice would probably still be Eberflus, but I just don't see him staying here.

Yea, drafting Tebow in the first was a horrible move, but he was also the first one to see Cutler for what he was. A big reason he was let go, was the whole Cutler/Cassell thing, and while Matt Cassell was a game manager at best, he was right on Cutler.

Can't stop an upward position move unless you throw money and at least contractual promises at the problem. You have to make him want to stay. My guess is he's gone and he's not someone you want to lose. JMO.

I thought you technically could stop anyone unless it was HC or GM, but was generally considered a **** move, and teams usually didn't.

Yes and he made some other foolish moves also. Fires all his offensive coaches that were ranked 2nd offensively the year before he was hired, got rid of a popular player who was the long snapper, hired a Qb coach with no experience, etc are just to name a few.

eberflus has done a great job with only lee and hitchens. he's never had a third lb worth anything. I expect him to be an outstanding dc.

Letting him walk out the door would be a big mistake. Not that Rod doesn’t know what he is doing. He’s a good coach. I don’t always agree with what he does. But I do know he teaches wel and gets guys to play hard.

But no matter what Rod decides to do, it won’t be long term. Everybody knows that. They have to speak with Rod. Keep him on the staff. Pay him for that. He can stay with orginanaztion even after he retires. Then let Eberflus run the d. Let’s see what he has.

It’s not easy to find guys. Most good ones are under contract as position coaches and teams don’t let them leave.

Let's see

O-Coordinator Rick Dennison to Matt McCoy: probably an upgrade. Not to mention Dennison stayed on as the offensive line coach and McCoy was also the QB coach in 2009, Ben McDaniels took over in 2010 and he was on staff as an offensive assistant the year prior, not exactly a strange move. I'm not an expert on Denver, but Mike Shanahan was probably more or less the O-coordinator in 1998 to be honest.
QB Coach Jerremy Bates to Matt McCoy: given his coaching history, right move. You can definitely question adding Ben McDaniels, who I assume is realted to Josh McDaniels, but again, he was on the staff in 2009 and losing Bates wasn't much anyway.
RB Coach Bobby Turner: Stayed on as RB coach, left the following season. Replaced by Eric Studesville, who is the assistant HC/RB coach in Denver now.
WR Coach Jedd Fisch to Adam Gase: Considering Gase is a head coach now, that's an upgrade.
TE Coach Pat McPherson to Clancy Barone: McPherson has been in Seattle since leaving, Barone has been in Denver since. Barone at least developed Julius Thomas, but it's hard to really say this was a bad decision. Not good either, just trading 6 of half a dozen. Barone move to o-line coach in 2010 and was replaced by Bob Ligashesky, who hasn't really found success.
OLine Coach Rick Dennison: Stayed as well for year 1, was replaced in year two by Clancy Barone, who has bounced around between O-line coach and TE coach.

I like Eberflus and think he's had a challenge at LB coach, they were never great. And it's not like we haven't had talent there. Specifically in pass protection the last few seasons have been bad. And he was promoted to passing game coordinator. I just wouldn't chalk him up as the next greatest thing.

He's considered DC or HC material.

I *think* you can block anything short of the guy with final say. For example, you can block an offensive assistant from taking a job as a position coach, or a scout as director of college personnel, but can't block a HC or GM move. May be wrong though.

Yeah, but you can't stop a guy who isn't under contract. Eberflus was offered an extension, but like our former WR coach, he declined to sign one.

Give me Patterson, and he can lure Hunter here in 2019 when he becomes an UFA if the Vikes don’t sign him long term
