Emmitt or Dorsett

I believe it was Nate Newton who said they were not pro bowlers until Emmitt arrived. When Emmitt missed two games to start the 1993 season we lost both games and against Atlanta he went out hurt after 1 carry…lost the game.

I will add that Emmitt, TD and Staubach are my favorite Cowboys.
That's true , I almost forgot about that. whenever Emmitt wasn't there they had a much harder time winning. luckily, that was not much.

The Cowboys have been blessed to have TWO of the greatest RBs to ever play the game. Over their careers they averaged similar YPA (Dorsett - 4.3, Emmitt - 4.2). Dorsett seemed more potent in the passing game (YPC - 8.2, Emmitt - 6.3) while Emmitt did a considerably better job of protecting the ball (61 career fumbles to Dorsett’s 90). Dorsett was capable as a blocker but Emmitt was outstanding in pass protection.

It’s a tough choice but I have to go with Mr. Longevity here, Emmitt Smith. Maybe the greatest Cowboys player EVER - Smith is definitely in that conversation.

You have solid team with very good OLine but you gotta pick your RB… who you picking yo be your RB? And why?
Tony Dorsett
Emmitt Smith

This a very tough call. Dorsett is a threat every time he touches the ball to take it to the house but occasionally gets caught behind the los and Emmitt rarely gets caught behind the los but rarely takes it to the house.
Wow!

One of the best questions ever posed in here and one of the toughest to answer. I’m paralyzed trying to pick one. I don’t think I have an answer in me because I feel like I would personally offend one of them.

For one game? I'd probably pick TD. For a season or career, it's Emmitt. Emmitt was a workhorse and would get stronger as the game\season went on. Never really seen anything like it. Maybe AP, had he not been a knucklehead..

Both were great - but I think Emmitt had the benefit of a much better O-Line in front of him. With that O-Line, I'd take Barry Sanders over either.
Barry was a different kind of runner. He was a single set back, spread the offense. That was not the Cowboys. Barry also didn't do a lot of catching out of the backfield or GL running. Emmitt did all of it. The Lions system didn't work against very good defenses. Washington dominated them.

Both were great IMO, and I really couldn't pick between the two.

That said, both back had great QB's to work with along with some great supporting teammates.

Too me this isn’t a question. Smith is the greatest RB of all time. Most yards-most TD- can block.

For the longest time, I preferred Dorsett as the best pure runner and obvious speed advantage. But in recent years, I have gained considerable appreciation for Emmitt for his durability and the way he avoided direct contact that prolonged his career. I'd be curious what NFL defenders would say - what would be a bigger pain, Dorsett's home run threat on every play or Emmitt wearing defenses out. Great debate topic IMO.

Very well said.

Emmitt can win a game, grind out the clock, and then seal the deal. All around total RB.

Dorsett can break a game wide open to bring a team back or blow a team out with 1 or 2 plays. Complete difference maker and game changer at RB.

MaryAnn - in a heartbeat!
Ive always settled on both at the same time. You know Ginger's got the experience but Maryanne is gonna make up for that with sheer determination .

The other plus with Maryann is that a shorter man doesn't need a step stool if the action is vertical

Tony D every day of the week and twice on Sunday. If Tony had the line that Emmitt had, he would of rushed for 3000 yards. Nobody in the history of the nfl had the acceleration and speed like Tony, every time he touched the ball, he was a threat to score.
