Smith was on the local radio station as he is playing in the Lake Tahoe Celebrity golf tournament. He was discussing his strengths and weaknesses as a tv analysis and of course the interviewers asked what he thought of the cowboys collapse last year. He reported that he did not think that the cowboys had any motivation or excitement at all at the end of the season espicially in the playoffs against the Giants. Felt that the Giants showed more emotion than the cowboys and that our team had more talent then them. No way the Cowboys lose with the talent that they had but it appeared that they lacked any heart. He said that Jimmy Johnson made the practices so hard that the games were easy to play and that they did not worry if they were behind due to how hard the practices were. He said that Phillips is a good coach but he maybe too relax and the cowboys made need a guy like Johnson or Parcells who will be always on them and demand perfection. He went on to say that Johnson would never have let them have 4 days off before the playoffs and that Romo going to Cabo with Jessica was a distraction to the team. He said that you do not need to be a celebrity QB in this league.

He was very blunt and straight forward and did not appear to mince any words. It almost sounded as if he was uspet with the Cowboys last year for missing out on golden opportunity. Just FYI.

By the way, how many playoff games did Parcells win in Dallas? And how many playoff games did Johnson win in Miami? And which coach in the modern era has the worst playoff loss, and one of the worst NFL losses ever? What was the problem, didn't Jimmuh demand perfection?

Emmitt continues in the grand tradition of great football players who are terrible analysts.

I think he was absolutely right about our guys taking the Giants lightly.
And its clear we were not really ready to play our best at that time.
That is mostly on the coach.

I just thought we got debacled.

The proof is in the pudding though: we lost to an inferior team.
Emmitt's comments are true.

Most of his comments were off base. Parcells didn't do to well when he was here.

Yeah, I understand the Parcell's bit, but I think he means someone less laid back like Wade. It didn't seem to work for the team when Bill was here, but maybe the extreme opposite cost when it counted the most. The end of the season was a mighty dud, after such an aggressive and exciting beginning.

We need to keep that fire & hunger throughout the season and playoffs and not fizzle out.

I think Emmitt is a little off on the celebrity QB comments... I guess that Troy Aikman doing country music videos wasn't a distraction then. That seems like a bit more celebrity (Grand Ole Opra) than taking a weekend off in Cabo... Plus, I guess that makes Jason Witten a celebrity tight end too because he was there.

Big Dawg Paparazzi gotta eat too, no way Romo goes through a Jack in the Box drive-thru without ESPN splashing it on SportsCenter

i think that emmitt smith hit the nail on the head, to a point,

that emmitt was right about the team lacking heart, motivation, intensity in december and the playoffs

i am beginning to think maybe their is more to the lack of intensity heart, more than just from the head coach.

Its true that no way should there have been a layoff with the bye week, the 4 day layoff and the new era QB romo that likes to party and go on trips before a big game. Right there I question Romo's true heart before a big game and intensity. Sure you can be too tight, but no way should you be out partying before a big playoff game.

Like Parcells said, the QB shouldnt be a Vegas mega QB, but a mentor to the team. I bring another point that I am starting to wonder about Romo. I am not saying I am right, but beginning to wonder. Romo has been on the crusp of winning big golf tournaments or being nominated to go to a big golf championship. Each time, Romo loses out, is the same thing happening with football with Romo like Golf? Is Romo spending too much time partying, playing football and golf, that takes away from excelling to championship in one area? Just wondering what you guys think?

Back to the loss of heart, motivation, leadership on this team. When a star player like Newman says, that we, the dallas cowboys players took the Giants too lightly, then something is wrong. So, where does that light taking teams in late December and playoffs lay?

Is it possible that some of this lack of motivation, heart and desire lay at the doorsteps of Jerry Jones? I agree that the head coach like Emmitt Smith said, must not let a layoff lay, and let players go off partying at such a time. Even Darren Woodson said the Cowboy players must be studying and preparing, not partying. Even Nate Newton said the same thing.

So, my question is this, where does that lay, at footsteps of players, Jerry Jones, head coach. One guy wrote, when Jimmy Johnson went to Miami, he didnt have the same results and thats true. Yet, you have to remember when JImmy Johnson went to Miami he didnt have full control, with Don Shula still on the board, and sticking his fingers in Johnsons control of what Jimmy wanted to do.

Then like Parcells said, when he first joined the Cowboys he told Jerry Jones, we have to win quickly, or the way I run a team will get old, and players wont react correctly. Which the Cowboys did, they went to the playoffs first year Parcells was here, but flopped in December and January, and the same thing in 2005, and in 2006 with loss to Seattle. The players were flat,no heart and desire.

So, is there not enough leadership on this team, that the guys like Romo, Newman, Roy Williams whom Darren Woodson had to collar Roy Wiliams from trying to sneak out after practices, Woodson had to sit him butt down and study and watch film. Now that to me seems some of the problems. Then you add in maybe all of the distractions with Romo partying in Mexico with Jessica, stuff that Jerry Jones has the players do like visting hospitals, charities, etc, is all of this added in that takes away from the players really realizing what a price you have to pay to be a champion?

So, what do you guys think and do you think I am maybe onto something? That maybe Jerry Jones has to call these guys accountable. Even hold wade phillips accountable by saying, ok, wade lets look at your past history, you have taken teams to the playoffs 4 years, but each time you have lost in the playoffs why?

Isnt it time for you Wade Phillips to take a hard look at your coaching style in December and January, evaluate yourself honestly, and see what changes you need to make? Hold players to be more accoutable in December and January, and no more partying when it comes to playoffs. Even yourself WAde Phillips you have to set an example to the players, this is what it is gonna take, like your new team motto, Finiish, you have to finish too Wade, so the players what it takes.

this team has what I call are guys who like to pose and are fake warriors....guys who love the glare that comes with the star on the helmet and the status of being a key contributor for one of the most recongnizable teams in pro sports.....one of them is gone, akin adoyele...replaced by a guy who is all business. Another one is Patrick Crayton...and I will be curious to see how he responds to have an 'X' on his chest this year. Another is Andre Gurode...and I will be curious to see how he responds too all the accolades he has received of late. Bradie James was another before last year....he responded with a workmanlike all business season. JuJo was another one....he was really feeling himself because he was hand picked by parcells AND we passed up some other RBs to take him...he a solid rookie year, but the RB depth on this team was so bad it made him look like Tony Dorsett and he KNEW that...we all know how that turned out. The last guy I will call out is Marcus Spears...who seems to be very quotable...for whatever reason the media keeps a microphone in his face...he needs to respond with solid tenacious play on the field or he too will be gone. So the bad thing is we had too many guys in key positions that are fake ballers...the good news is that we are getting them out of here

Yeah I agree with you. I don't see any of those things in our team either, especially from Crayton or Gurode. Crayton balled all year long, had 1 bad game and fans are all over him for that. That's ridiculos!! And Gurode is one of the best centers in the league..

The whole rah-rah playing with heart thing I think has its place, but I still say a team with even an AVERAGE secondary doesn't lose that playoff game. At the end, I don't think any amount of welled-up spirit or energy could overcome that obvious, extremely exploitable weakness--even if it had managed to pull them out of the fire at other times.

best centers in the league do not routinely snap the ball before the QB is ready or snap the ball over the QBs head.....do you watch other teams besides the Cowboys? This does not happen that often...and it especially does not happen to Pro Bowl Centers. I did not say he was not good...what I said is that it is time he start playing to his reputation. The reason it took time for him to find a permanent place on this team was because of his lack of preparation/concentration...these are not my words....these are the words of coaches/scouts.
