Hey folks,

Just looked at the clip of Cowboys legend Emmitt Smith sitting down with Rich, Marshall and Coach Mariucci. The question was asked will the rushing record ever be broken, Marshall and Emmitt think it won't be touched. I tend to agree because today's NFL is going towards two back systems.

Jerry Rice and Emmitt Smith are holding ALL TIME records that will NEVER be broken in my opinion.

Here's the link, great stuff!

Never? That's a looong time. Taken out over a long enough time line I'd say the chances are 100% both will be broken and by many players.
With one proviso. That there is no major fundamental change in our society removing the focus from Pro Football and spectator sports in general.

If football is as important to us 50-100 years from now, than it is today. Than I say yes for sure.

I can see a future where elite athletes play at a peak level significntly longer than they do today.

I hope it never gets broken....but if it does, I hope its done by someone wearing a :star:

Well said!!! :clap2:

The funny thing is though... At first, the talking heads thought Emmitt was too small to make it in the NFL.
Looks like he proved them wrong!

And he has 3
:lombardi: rings to back it up!!!

No, Sherman. :)

Seriously, though, Emmitt hurt this team more than he helped it late in his career.

...at a loss for words over this post.

We should be ashamed that the Cowboys declined to such lowly depths, but to bag on Emmitt Smith for his last years of on field production and blaming him for "hurting" this team is preposterous.

It was obvious in the ensuing years that Hambrick was not able to take the next step after Smith was not sharing carries in the backfield.

The only negative on Emmitt at the end was his ill conceived "diamond in the rough" comment.

Nope. Peterson started a year later than Emmitt, which put him 937 yards behind Emmitt's pace right away, and he has fallen behind by about 100 more yards per season. After three seasons, he's 1,215 yards behind what Emmitt had at the same age.

Ill conceived? How about completely misinterpreted?

SAN ANTONIO -- Darren Woodson didn't have to hear the clarification from Emmitt Smith, but the Dallas Cowboys safety got a phone call from his former teammate with three Super Bowl championships.

Smith, now with Arizona after being released by the Cowboys last spring, said last season was the worst in his career. The comments by the NFL's career rusher included his diamond-among-trash reference that he has since tried to clarify publicly.

"He called me up and we talked for a while. He didn't have to put the record straight," Woodson said Tuesday. "I just knew it wasn't a big deal at the beginning. I didn't take it that way."

Smith was quoted by a Sports Illustrated writer that he "felt like a diamond surrounded by trash" last season.

Woodson is going into his 12th NFL season, all with the Cowboys and the first without Smith as a teammate. They remain good friends.

In explaining his comment publicly, Smith said he was referring to the behavior of some players.

"That statement meaning, like, the Cowboys is a diamond organization; the trash is the way that we played,'' Smith said. "The way we played did not represent that organization all that well last year, and the way some of the players acted did not represent what that organization deserved."

As long as the titans have mediocre receivers(kenny britt may be above average) i think cj has the most realistic chance of breaking it

Thing is CJ would have to do it for several more years right now he is not even close to being in the running for breaking the record. That is what makes this record difficult is the fact you need to produce for many years and the odds of a player getting injured or his play falling off drasticly as they get older makes this a tough record. I do think it will one day be broken and CJ may be the one but way to early in the going for CJ to be considered a real threat to the record

I'm of that belief as well, at one time I though Tomlinson might be able to catch Emmitt but he's on the decline in San Diego.
Before that there was the talk of Curtis Martin catching him, ain't gonna happen.

As a Cowboy fan, Emmitt's rushing record has to be one of the most overrated achievements of all-time. We watched this team do absolutely nothing for at least 3 years just so Emmitt and Jerry could get the record. It made me sick. Yay! He got the record. Our TEAM suffered from Emmtt's selfishness and Jerry's stubbornness, imo.

Yep, without Emmitt Dallas would have certainly won it all in 2000, 2001 and 2002. Quincy Carter was being held back because of Jerry's desire to get Emmitt the record. If Emmitt was not on the team they could have unleashed Quincy and it would have been nothing but championships baby.

Emmitt Smith 18,355

Peterson is only 13,871 behind Emmitt
Chris Johnson is only 15,121 behind Emmitt.

No problem man :laugh2:

That is pretty funny and true, too.

Peterson
20 fumbles
998 touches
1 fumble every 49.9 touches

Smith
61 fumbles
4928 touches
1 fumble every 80.7 touches

Point taken, but we still didn't find a worthy running back for quite sometime after that. Julius was OK, but that's about it. The crew we've got now is much more talented.

I don't remember Emmitt being too excited about sharing carries, which would have behooved his cause imo. But that's my only problem with Emmitt. He became too obsessed about the record, and not enough about the team. Towards the end, that was his goal more than anything.

Well then how was Emmitt holding the team back? By your own admission Dallas had no other running back worthy of sharing carries with Emmitt. Hambrick or Wiley certainly did nothing to deserve sharing carries. Emmitt did share carries with Chris Warren. He may not have liked it, but he did it. If Felix Jones or even Julius Jones were on those Dallas squads from 200 to 2002, they would have earned some carries. Again Emmitt would not have liked it, but it would have happened. Emmitt did not hold back the progress of any other running back at that time on the Dallas squad because there was no other running back on the squad worth it.

Assuming the league continues; I think Smith's record will be broken. All it will take to reverse the trend of shared carries from the position is one special talent. Longevity will be the determining factor, but if Smith was capable another will be also.

I disagree. He was the best back on our roster every season of his career, and he was still productive on bad teams. Even in his worst season for us, at age 33, he still averaged 3.8 yards per carry. It's not his fault that Jerry never prepared a replacement for him.

Exactly... Emmitt was the most durable/productive running back in NFL history.

Curtis Martin was one hell of a running back! I thought he was going to possibly catch Emmitt at one time.

Emmitt used the SAME analogy a few years before that, and it was clear what he meant. But when he used it while talking to Peter King, King misinterpreted it, never asked for clarification and ran with it. There never would have been any controversy over it if King had done his job with an ounce of professionalism.

Sounds like he was calling some of the players trash. Spin it any which way but lose.
