Physical music media is officially dead today. July 1st is the last day that Best Buy will sell music CDs with many other entertainment outlets to follow. In 2017, streaming services accounted for 62 percent of revenue from the US music market. Crazy!! The writing was on the wall for some time now, but still, didn't think I would see the day. I remember seeing my first CD back in like 1991. I was 11 years old and it was an amazing piece of technology. You could skip songs!! Also, to think about the money I dropped into my CD collection back in the late 90's/early 2000's, at $10-$15 a pop, is crazy. Even then you sometimes would get an album that only had a couple good songs on it. I also remember having the huge CD book/case in my car. Flipping through pages trying to find a good cruise album. Haha Great times.

Had I known about this, I would've gone in to see what kind of deals they had!

I lamented the passing of the vinyl, even though it did return, with liner notes and artwork even though the CD was a superior physical product. It had many advantages but when I turned on my tube amp, put a vinyl LP on my Denon turntable and dropped that stylus on the surface and that sound came from my Klipsch Cornwalls, that was magic and CD's never matched the "warmth" of that sound. There was something impersonal and sterile about CDs.

But no one mourned the passing of vinyl like my wife as she saw me begin to replace an extensive LP collection. I thought I was a good salesman but the smaller size, less space taken, and portability was a no sale. A collector with an obsession cannot be reasoned with as she discovered. Then came the DVDs to replace VHS and she was convinced technology was conspiring against her.

We did compromise that I would not give into my OCD of arranging the music by genre and worst of all sub genres because we all know there are at least 7 forms of Rock at the minimum and 4 forms of Jazz. However, there was only one form of Country...hers.

just counting the titles...I have over 500 Elvis CDs.
over 200 are concert bootleggs...some sound booth recordings but mostly from the audience.
The period of 69-73 is my favorite.
70,71 and 72 is my most favorite.
The August concerts from Vegas in 1970,Boston Garden '71,the first night performance at Madison Square Garden in '72,Greensboro,Hampton Roads and Richmond '72 are among the greatest LIVE performances he gave.

My personal favorite is his Memphis concert on March 16,1974...I was born on 3-16-73....I listen to that concert every year on my birthday.

I also have his very last concert from Indianapolis in '77.....its brings a tear when the CD stops.

8 tracks were so awesome, I remember riding around with a butter knife jammed under 8 track tapes so they would play right.

Wait, you guys BUY music? Lol. Gotta love youtube.

I have a pretty extensive collection of music on my computer. A lot I have bought over the years and a lot I have "acquired". With that said, I started a Youtube Premium trial last month so I could watch Cobra Kai on there. It came with Google Play Music. Didn't think for a second I cared as I have a lot of music already. Buddy texted me a few days later that a group we liked dropped a new album. Being at work, I remembered I had that Google Play service. Looked it up and the album was there. Since then, I can't stop using the service. Absolutely amazing to have for a music lover. I plan on keeping it.

I think the journey through time is a part of being anybody. Look, I get it, here today gone tomorrow. It's life. Still, not only is it surreal to see how quickly time is passing by in front of all of us, I don't think there is anything wrong with understanding, enjoying, and looking back at the path you created for yourself to get here and the things that were a part of it. A major part of my life was (and continues to be) music. So, seeing a major staple of my growing up going away, well, it's a sobering experience.

I just go to a video of the song I want and download the song as a mp4 and voila, free song.

As have I. It can just be a lot of work if you're looking for an entire album or discography.
True. Sometimes people upload entire albums. But I rarely want entire albums. CDs are not the only thing online services have or will crush. Soon DVDs will go by the wayside too. Phonebooks are another casulty. I still get them believe it or not. What a waste. Hard to believe people would use a yellow pages or phone book. Another one was Mapsco. Remember those? When i used to live in the DFW area, i used to use a mapsco to get around. Technology is changing everything.

Vinyl is on the comeback in a big way...maybe we'll have record stores again. I draw my line at cassette's and 8 tracks making a come back...

Yeah, I think eventually physical movie formats will go the wayside too. That was the excuse Sony had for not putting a 4k player in the PS4 Pro. I don't think it will be as soon as some people think, however. A major chunk of people are still very limited by their internet speeds and plans. I believe an average 4k movie is around 100gb. Depending on a user's speed, that could take a lot to stream and buffer or even download. I know Cable One around here has data caps. Plans start at 300gb a month. I realize not everybody is into 4k or has the technology for it yet but that is definitely where the future is currently going.
