...and things went well. Their team went third in the league after their inaugural season as the seventh place team.
They lost the semi final game 8-0 in a close defensive battle. Nicholas had a chance to make it a single point game, but he couldn't wrap up for a pick. Had he done it there was clear sailing to the house.
He played cornerback on the field side every play and was the team's punt returner.
He was defensive player of the game in the fifth game of the season and I suspect at the upcoming awards banquet he may get some hardware. The coaches tipped me off that he was in the running for an award. I guess we will see.
He's really enjoyed himself and being on the team for the past three years has really boosted his confidence. He's come a long way from that 10 year old who had his hands stapled on backwards and couldn't walk himself through a ladder drill save his father's life. :laugh2:
This year he was in the hands of other coaches as I stayed down in the peewee ranks to stabilize that coaching staff. Due to scheduling I only got to see (2) of his (9) games, but it's still a special feeling to see your own son playing a game you loved as a child.
This past season we as volunteer parents and coaches finished what was a three year project to bring football to our small town of 6000 people. We started out with a pee wee team of (26) players and now we have (193) players from 8 yr old flag football players to 18 yr old high school football players.
The pee wee team had (67) players try out and we kept (51) for our game roster. It still amazes me how well our community has taken to football.
The group fundraised $200,000.00 in three years to provide equipment for the (5) teams and we built a brand new football field complete with score clock, two storey announcer's/spotter's booth and bleachers.
Next up will be (4) light towers so we can host night games. This is what has been taking up the majority of my time and keeping me away from the forum.
BTW, if none of the forum members have ever heard of Saskatchewan before we are considered in football circles up here "Texas North".
Any of the other Canadian forum members can attest to how big football is here in this province with our local teams the Saskatchewan Roughriders, University of Saskatchewan Huskies and the Saskatoon Hilltops.
Our Annual "Homecoming" Pee Wee game for 11 and 12 year olds had (1500) people in the stands.
Football is over now, but I will post next year on the team and my son's journey in the sport.
