Ending the Ellis saga

He won't be recovered until October. It takes 12 months with this injury.

Personally, I wish we'd move him back to DE and use him as a situational Pass Rusher. I don't want Spencer off the field.

kevin smith (pup) never fully recovered.

in fact, how many players have recovered 100% from an achilles rupture injury? if he's not even been able to practice at all then what kind of "Football shape" is he in? we've been going "day by day" when it's more like month by month.

we'll see what happens but if ellis has yet to hit the field, i doubt suddenly he'll wake up today or tomorrow and go "golly, my foot feels 100% again!" and skip around like a little school girl.

spencer better be ready or we've got some issues on our hands.

That has been the plan and something Dallas has had to count on since they drafted Spencer. Him starting game one was a very likely scenario in April and has become a reality now. The Cowboys have taken the steps to deal with the possibility that Ellis may not return, whether early or ever. Hopefully they took the right steps.

i think they did the right thing to try and address it and that's really all you can ask. spencer has been getting good / solid reviews in camp, so let's see if that translates onto the field. for all the whining ellis has done, he's also been on hell of a "coach" for spencer as i understand it so you gotta commend him for that.

Agreed.

So someone explain to me why he didn't go on the pup list to begin with. Were we afraid to stick Spencer in there week one like we are going to do anyway?

The achilles tendon is healed, but now he's got bursitis in his heel. If the tendon wasn't healed, they never would have let him practice the first week. When he practiced, his heel became the problem and that's what he's trying to recover from. This is why they continue to list him day to day.

Why is it a saga? It is an injury. A pretty major one that takes time to recover from.

Yer right. it does take time. Take it from someone who was hobbled for 6 months and then took another 12 months to fully restored extension and faith that it would not rupture again.

What is puzzling is the Cowboys have that much patience.
Life goes on. The NFL goes on.
No matter how great -- or in Ellis' case adequate -- a player is, he is of NO HELP on the bench.
Coupled with his age and proclivity to whine about salary, security, etc., he's better off on the PUP for now and not taking up space or oxygen on the sidelines.

Ellis seemed as puzzled about Dallas drafting Spencer as McNabb was puzzled about the Eagles drafting Kolb. Older veterans should realize that the future comes sooner rather than later in the NFL.

Not exactly the same, but you're right. Everyone gets replaced eventually.

If Phillips did not want Ellis here he would be gone, evidently he think Ellis will be able to help us at some point. I do think this will be Ellis last season on this team.

I think if management had it to do over again, they would have PUP'd him. Its too bad the bursitus didn't show up until camp started.

What has frustrated most fans, besides the contract whining :)explode:) was they bought into expectations that Ellis would turn a 12 month rehab into only 10, and that since late July he's been described as day-to-day.

The expectations were unrealistic.

First of all, I'm not sure he's eligibile. If you practice in training camp, you're not allowed on the PUP list, and Ellis did practice at least part of the first day of camp.

Second of all, when you go on the PUP list you can't practice with the team and you can't workout with the team. The only contact you're allowed with the team is receiving treatment from the training staff. So it's not like he can just dress out, ready to go for Week 7. Most likely he's going to need another 2-3 weeks to get back into football shape and adjusted to playing with pads. Which puts you in the Week 9-11 range. Likely, he needs more than that since he hasn't played played competitive football in over a year and is probably extremely rusty ... which means you can pretty much write him off for the season.

Finally, the poster above is right about this mostly being psychological than physical. Mickey said that Ellis has received three clean bills of health from three different doctors, including Andrews who is the world's most renowned sports orthopedic surgeon. The problem with Greg is that he is experiencing some pain and discomfort, which is to be expected, and he's scared to get out on the field and cut loose. This is a hurdle that all players have to go through, no matter what the injury is. When you're recuperating from an ACL injury, eventually the time comes when you have to nut up and start doing some hard cuts on the knee, and that hurdle is more psychological than physical. Its not so much that it takes a year for the leg to "heal", it takes a year for the player to trust it again. Players who brim with a lack of confidence and a general defeatist attitude probably take longer to clear that hurdle than others.

Except that you can't CUT an injured player.

Aside from that great analysis. (please note sarcasm)

Probably the reason why he is delaying his return....the moment he comes back they will realize he is useless than it will be siyanora....thanks for your great and insightful response though (please not the sarcasm).

I can't stand him anymore, but if he gets on the field and helps us win let him play. But I definitely think Jerry is very tired of his act and he gets rid of him after this season even if he plays well.

I'm by no means an Ellis apologist, in fact I grew tired of is constant whining last year. But, from someone who's experienced a major injury and surgery (back) I can somewhat relate. While the doctors have clear him and he may have recovered from the Achilles surgery, and the timeframe for recovery "may" be 12 months...it takes much longer to get the mental/psychogical confidence back and IMO that is what Ellis struggling with.

I don't see him back (contributing) until mid-season at the earliest.
