Hey folks. I have a lovely lady and I need to put a ring on it but I don't know much about them. Well. Not much more than I can research online.

So I'm looking for some unbiased opinions or advice on finding a good ring.

Question 1: Where is the best place to find good deals on engagement settings and center stones in DFW?

Question 2: is there a stigma for purchasing the engagement setting online (without the stone)?

Thanks in advance!

Best advice that I can advise.................

Ask her what cut and type of gold that she likes, she will have a preference. Have one of her friends tell you if it is a total surprise.

Yeah that's good advice. I went through her Pinterest on her iPad to get an idea of what she wanted and I plan on sending what I find through her best friend.

Doesn't really answer your question, but, I wouldn't spend to much money. Buy something nice and call it a day.

That's what I'm trying to avoid. Although diamonds are supposedly valuable, they have little re-sale value, so why are they considered valuable in the first place? Artificial scarcity is the answer.

Not that I plan on re-selling it and not that I don't want her to have something she'll really love, but in the end, it's a rock on a metal hoop-- doesn't keep us fed, clothed or sheltered.

Completely agree. Diamonds are a waste...to us, men. Women dig the bling though. And she will compare it to others and her friends. It puts us guys in a tough spot.

With all that being said, try the Diamond Doctor.

Diamond Nexus is a synthetic option. Much better that CZ, but still not the real deal. Maybe she wouldn't notice. :)

Good luck.

Hahaha, no lie. I've seriously considered it. Just don't know enough about diamonds to know when I'm being taken advantage of.
Neither do I. But I do know you can get a good deal there if you hire or have a friend who knows what is what.

Oh no joke. Girls LOVE their engagement rings. And we have a lot of friends that are recently engaged/married... There will be comparisons.

I've heard a lot of good things about diamond doctor, but I just don't know how much difference in price there will be from other stores. Even though they market as wholesale, with the amount of marketing they do,their Highland Park showroom, and affiliation with the Cowboys, I find it hard to believe that it's any better of a deal than Robbins Brothers or something like that.

But then again, I don't really know. Anyone shop both places before?

...man I'm starting to sound cheap.

Samuels Jewelry helped me out a ton. They always have sales going. Got me a really nice one and even put it on their CC with zero interest for a year. I paid it off before that hit :)

Diamond Exchange is another wholesale diamond place in Dallas.

This place has less of a marketing splash. And it has a very cool diamond selector widget.

Id suggest finding a diamond that you are interested in. Cut/Clarity/Color/Carat. And then compare at the various places. Find the two that are the cheapest for the same exact diamond. Read some reviews. Then go look at the diamonds first hand.

Just don't be intimidated. Read up on this and you'll be an expert.

My wife works at the Zales corporate office, so I am a little biased. Generally, stores have different level diamonds. At Zales, the Vera Wang stuff is the top of the line. I definitely wouldn't buy a stone online. I would ask to look at the diamonds with a loop (the little magnifying glass thing they have) and make sure there are no obvious flaws. Zales also offers a free service where you get it cleaned and inspected every month, and if a diamond ever falls out, they will replace it.

There's a lot of info here: http://www.zales.com/jewelry101/index.jsp

Read this before you buy a diamond. The link has profanity, but I'm sure you can figure it out. Get a different stone, something unique.

I told my wife(before she was my wife), I wanted to marry her, and said, you need to come to the jewelry store to pick it out, otherwise, I am going to spend too much(she handles the finances).
