I'm an 18 year old year college student who has just now begun to really become interested in Dallas Cowboys football once the Dave Campo regime begin. For the past 4-5 years I've been all over message boards, and every other Cowboy's source to find info about my favorite team. During the glory years (early 90s) I was always able to watch, but not quite comprehend Dallas Cowboys football.

So my thread is basically an opportunity for the elder statesmen around here to help out the younger members of the boards and explain to us the kind of feelings you had when Dallas was dominate during the years I can't remember. So feel free to recollect and flash back on yesteryear.

1974. Every kid in my 3rd grade class, and the rest of the elementary school playground crowd, think the undefeated Miami Dolphins are the baddest thing around.
Then I start watching football and see this guy named "Starback"(I thought at the time) pulling out all these come from behind victories.
I soon learned him and his teammates dominated the mighty Dolphins in the Superbowl only two years earlier.
I was on my way to being a fan at that point, then the Hail Mary came along the next year.
Coincidentally, the Hail Mary occurred as my sister's high-school boyfriend was razzing me to no end about how the Vikings were going to kill the Cowboys.
To my 11 year old mind it was a fantastic experience.

It's a good thread, I look forward to reading it.

I'm only 24 so while I remember the glory years of the '90s, I certainly don't remember them as well as a lot of folks do.

The entire NFL landscape was different....It was like having 4 TO's on the team at once.
The Dallas Cowboys transcended NFL football. The 69ers were big too but since we kept kicking their butts and winning championships they were just the team we beat in the playoffs every year and the only real threat to ever challenge us.
Articles were written, pictures taken, and stories done by thousands of non-football entities about the Dallas Cowboys or our players. Valley Ranch was like hollywood, only bigger. There weren't enough spotlights to go around.
Fans were divided into three groups, The good: Dallas Cowboy Fans, The Bad: Cowboy-haters, and the Ugly: 69er fans.

As for games, our team was like a noose around your throat from the opening gun....we'd inevitably start every game with an opening, 10-play drive scoring a touchdown then the noose just kept cinching tighter and tighter until our giant OL and Emmitt would grind it out and crush any hopes of a rally a team may have.
Whenever we made it to a big game, we could count on Irvin, Aikman, and Emmitt to have their best games.
It truly was a thing of beauty.

From Grandpa CBZ.....:D

Ask any one of the older fans on the board and they will tell you how frustrating it was waiting ten years for that 1st Super Bowl Victory. There were many temper tantrums, things thrown at the TV sets, Radios smashed against the walls, divorces….You name it and it probably happened.

We experienced the heart breaking loses with Meredith and Morton at the helm. Then in 1971 under the leadership of Roger Staubach the football Gods smiled down on the Dallas Cowboys. We were the NFL Champions at last.

It was worth the long frustrating wait.

As for 2006.....I feel we're close. Things have to fall into place for us.....OL especially.

I'm only 17 and just started to like Sports! Once I saw the Monday night game against the Seahawks in 04 I was hooked to footall. In these few short years I have learned even more about football then my father who had been watching since 1975. I guess I started watching the Dallas Cowboys at the right time, I would love for the Cowboys to win a superbowl this season, and rub it in to my cousins faces who hate the Dallas Cowboys.:D

I got on board in 1965 season while watching the "Playoff Bowl"....I think the Cowboys took a beating from the Colts.

The playoff bowl was the consolation prize game for the teams that finished behind the winners...in other words, the LOSER bowl.

Anyway...the Cowboys had this guy named Bob Hayes who the announcer mentioned was the fastest human being on the planet.

Well, between that and the star on the helmet, I was in love.

In the beginning, it was heartache after heartache...the two close losses to the Packers...the KILLER losses in two consecutive seasons to the inferior Browns...and then the Super Bowl loss to the Colts. All were heartbreakers.

When we beat the Dolphins that was a feeling beyond joy.

The team was simply the most innovative in sports. They used computers long before anyone else. The offensive line did the "up/down" thing before the snap of the ball. Landry utilized multiple formation offenses and the Flex defense.

It was just the coolest team on the planet...and it was pure magic to root for them, especially when Roger arrived.

There's some great stuff in the History Zone here. Check it out when you have a chance.

Dude, I(and prolly every member here) can go on and on about the greatest franchise in sports history.

You best bet to get your own perspective of the history of the Cowboys would be to buy "The History of the Dallas Cowboys" DVD.

I wrote, "Norm Boulache eats goulash" in big letters with a marks-a-lot(you call them sharpies or permanent ink markers now) on my First National Bank of Weslaco book cover on my geography book in Mrs. McIlherans social studies class when the Cowboys played the dolphins in the Superbowl.

I got in trouble too!

Garrison, Thomas and Hill-now that was a backfield children!

The 1992, 1993 Dallas Cowboys teams were the best football teams in the history of forever. Period.

I lived in Dallas from early 90 to late 91... people in Dallas hated the Cowboys back then and the rest of the world didnt care... That all changed! Back then a college coach in the NFL didnt go over well either so everyone in the NFL hated the Cowboys!!!

Things I recall...

1. The Boys had the #1 D and noone made the PROBOWL

2. I saw one game in person the 82 season, MNF v. the Iggs... If u watch , that game its amazing how much that team grew up in such a short period of time!

3. Watching Emmitt was like eating a perfect steak that u cooked yourself on the grill... not only does it taste good but u are proud that cooked it yourself!!! Emmitt would have been fun to watch no matter what team he played for but the fact that he played for the BOYS... almost unreal!

4. People say how great the OL was... AIKMAN used to get creamed! Imagine him in the ring with LENNOX LEWIS... that type of creamed!!! tell you a story... after a Iggs game where Troy was sacked about 11 times and was hit on about 20 more, I mean HIT! the Hits were harder than the sacks!

He was MIA for his monday morning radio show... they ended up calling Troys mom who had no idea where he was... I thought he was dead!

5. When they won it... beat SF and the BILLS it was the greatest!!! because you didnt expect the BOYS to win and it made it soo much sweeter. After the first SB everyone expected them to win every game and when they didnt the HATERs came out in full force!!!

I don't know if anyone remembers the Sunday night game against the Vikings when Emmitt went off for almost 150 yards in the first half before breaking his hand on a long TD run at the end of the 2nd quarter.

Then the opening game of the season when we thrashed the Steelers I believe 37-7, and ended up having one of the most dissapointing seasons. The beginning of the end for the 90s dynasty.

I've been in a similar boat (21 years old) and been watching since I could remember tuning into games (7 or 8 years old at the time). Recently I was at Barnes and Noble here in nebraksa, of all places, and came across a book called Tales from the Dallas Cowboys
by Cliff Harris, Charlie Waters

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1582613850/102-6426652-9623323?v=glance&n=283155

I sat down and read the first 40 or so pages in the store. Its an excellent book, IMO. If you want to know the ins and outs of the team back then, I would highly recommend reading this book. I'm sure there are many many books about the Cowboys, but this one is relatively inexpensive and gives the viewpoints of two different guys (they alternate chapters). I dunno how far back you wanna go.

I'm also in a similar situation. I was a Cowboys fan from birth simply because may dad was, but it really wasn't until the beginning of the 3 5-11 years that I started to really pay attention to what went on with the Cowboys. I can call myself a true fan because I've really only had two winning seasons in my diehard following of the Cowboys.
The draft we got Roy in was the first time I started to follow them through the internet. I don't remember what it was that sparked my interest, but I wanted to know everything about who we could be drafting. I remember the debates of Roy vs. Jammer. (glad the Chargers took Jammer) I found Kffl and off of that board is where I first heard about thecowboys.net, the old website.
Since then I have been almost as addicted to this site as I am the Cowboys. Really, for me, being a Cowboys fan isn't just about watching the games anymore. Its just as rewarding sharing the Cowboys with my fellow Cowboys fans and community. :starspin

:D Don't feel bad...I thought the Steelers had a guy named Frank O'Harris.
