Things go in Cycles...

I've been a big Cowboy fan for over 20 years. As a young child, I remember Roger Staubach and had a poster of him on my wall.

Also had a Richard Todd poster. (I was a little kid in NY...whadda ya want from me?) When the Jets moved to NJ, I dropped them as a team and even more closely embraced the Cowboys since they were already out of town and moving would have meant nothing to me.

But in Staubach's days I didn't really comprehend the game as well. I was just a fan because everyone (EVERYONE) was either a Cowboy fan or a Steeler fan. It was Bradshaw jerseys vs Staubach jerseys, but I actually grew to be more knowledgeable during the tenure of Danny White.

The "catch" is one of my earlier memories of a specific moment in football, and the 49ers were the first team is REALLY hated for myself.

Sure, I was told I should hate the Steelers and the Skins, but that damn catch was the first time I had my heart ripped out watching a football game.

The first draft I paid attention to netted us the one and only Danny Noonan in the first round.

I remember Gary Hogeboom (now of Survivor fame as well). I remember Steve Peuller. I remember how Phil Pozderac taught me what offensive holding was. I remember Reggie Collier and the replacement sensation Kevin Sweeney.

I remember when friends ribbed me for being Cowboy fan as the 85 Bears bandwagon filled (I particularly remember that nasty 44-0 beating by the Bears).

I remember Giants fans around me riding high with Lawrence Taylor (good god he was dominant!), and a much younger Tuna. The Commanders nabbing a cheap SB or two with the strike shortened years.

At least we always had the Cardinals to beat up on (even with Neil Lomax).

I remember being excited about the Hershel walker trade; hoping Darrin Nelson would be a good RB for us, and Ike Holt would be a a good DB. I also remember Nelson thinking so little of the Cowboys that he refused to show up and got shipped off to San Diego.

I remember 1 and 15.

Mid to late 80's were a pretty flat time, and it's that period I forged my fandom. I will tell you now, those times made the dominance in the 90's even sweeter.

I cheered when we drafted Aikman instead of that OL Mandarich (despite what SI wanted). I remember the archaic Plan B free agency that brought us Jay Novacek. I remember Irvin showing flash even though was hurt his first year. I remember Emmitt breaking through holes as Blair Thomas turned into a HUGE bust. I remember laughing at that. (since my brief Jets affiliation had long ended.)

I remember feeling like something was growing. That something was coming together. It was nearly as much fun to see the pieces click together as it was to watch us finally break thorugh and become that unstoppable force that the 90's Cowboys became.

Now we've had another stretch of lean years. The younger fans who just missed out on that surgical juggernaught of the early nineties will grow into football remembering Quincy Carter and Chad Hutchinson. The brief stint of Tony Banks, and how Solomon Page taught them how laziness trumps measurables. They'll remember the Hambrick Brothers and David LaFleur's back.

They'll remember Darren Woodson and would choose him over any other Woodson out there (who needs Rod or Charles).

They'll remember feeling that something was beginning to grow. Slowly at first with Roy Williams and Terrence Newman, then gaining speed as the other defensive and offensive pieces began to fall into place.

It's a good time to be a Cowboy fan.

I lived in Dallas from early 90 to late 91... people in Dallas hated the Cowboys back then and the rest of the world didnt care... That all changed! Back then a college coach in the NFL didnt go over well either so everyone in the NFL hated the Cowboys!!!

Things I recall...

1. The Boys had the #1 D and noone made the PROBOWL

2. I saw one game in person the 82 season, MNF v. the Iggs... If u watch , that game its amazing how much that team grew up in such a short period of time!

3. Watching Emmitt was like eating a perfect steak that u cooked yourself on the grill... not only does it taste good but u are proud that cooked it yourself!!! Emmitt would have been fun to watch no matter what team he played for but the fact that he played for the BOYS... almost unreal!

4. People say how great the OL was... AIKMAN used to get creamed! Imagine him in the ring with LENNOX LEWIS... that type of creamed!!! tell you a story... after a Iggs game where Troy was sacked about 11 times and was hit on about 20 more, I mean HIT! the Hits were harder than the sacks!

He was MIA for his monday morning radio show... they ended up calling Troys mom who had no idea where he was... I thought he was dead!

5. When they won it... beat SF and the BILLS it was the greatest!!! because you didnt expect the BOYS to win and it made it soo much sweeter. After the first SB everyone expected them to win every game and when they didnt the HATERs came out in full force!!!

Nice Post!!!!!!

I mean that!!!

I'm an 18 year old year college student who has just now begun to really become interested in Dallas Cowboys football once the Dave Campo regime begin. For the past 4-5 years I've been all over message boards, and every other Cowboy's source to find info about my favorite team. During the glory years (early 90s) I was always able to watch, but not quite comprehend Dallas Cowboys football.

So my thread is basically an opportunity for the elder statesmen around here to help out the younger members of the boards and explain to us the kind of feelings you had when Dallas was dominate during the years I can't remember. So feel free to recollect and flash back on yesteryear.

I have been a fan since I was 6 years old in the early 70s. I bought tickets and went to games when we were 1-15 and 3-13 in the late 80s. I was at the stadium for opening day versus the Commanders in the mid-80s when we all burst out in a spontaneous rendition of "Happy Birthday" when Theismann (on his birthday) was pulled from the game after throwing 4 interceptions. I listened to some of the local idiots that cried about Aikman and how Steve Walsh should be starting instead. I lived through the painful years and still I cheered and hoped.

When we finally won the first Super Bowl in the 90s it was a feeling of unbelieveable euphoria. I couldn't sleep all that night. I stayed up all night watching the TV interviews, recaps, etc. It was an amazing feeling and I hope that we get to experience it again in the near future.

I've been in a similar boat (21 years old) and been watching since I could remember tuning into games (7 or 8 years old at the time). Recently I was at Barnes and Noble here in nebraksa, of all places, and came across a book called Tales from the Dallas Cowboys
by Cliff Harris, Charlie Waters

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1582613850/102-6426652-9623323?v=glance&n=283155

I sat down and read the first 40 or so pages in the store. Its an excellent book, IMO. If you want to know the ins and outs of the team back then, I would highly recommend reading this book. I'm sure there are many many books about the Cowboys, but this one is relatively inexpensive and gives the viewpoints of two different guys (they alternate chapters). I dunno how far back you wanna go.

That is a great book.I read it cover to cover in oneday!
