Yet another one of my mocks. But the past two weeks have really given us the knowledge of where people are slotted and needs for teams. I see the weakest part of the draft being the bottom third of the 1st through the first half of the second round. But, that is where the strength of this draft starts and rolls through the fourth round. I think there are several groups of players that will play better than their draft status in this area. I think teams will overdraft projects in the late 1st and early second, guys like Justin Houston, Mikel Leshoure, and Muhammad Wilkerson. Nonetheless, here is what I think may play out on draft day.
9. Tyron Smith OT USC
Trading down too far in the first is a bad idea IMO, the talent falls off and teams will start overdrafting the likes of Mallett, Ingram and Ryan Kerrigan. Smith will start at RT right away and be more successful than Young or Columbo will do, and will only get better.
40. Trade to KC for 55 and 86.
55. Johnny Patrick CB Louisville
Patrick is sliding because of his arrest, but he has shown himself on the field as a talented man cover corner with the ability to get even better. Will at the least be a good nickel corner, is smooth enough to cover smaller, quicker receivers in the slot. Can step in and replace Newman sooner rather than later, i.e. starting 2012.
71. Clint Boling G Georgia
Can step in at LG and start there for 8-10 years. He too will start sliding for his arrest for DUI, IMO. But, he is a Kosier clone who can pull, trap and steer block without being an overweight oaf.
86. Jarvis Jenkins DE Clemson
Jenkins will easily step in for Spears should we decide to part ways with him before the draft. Otherwise he can be a good rotation guy this year and take over for Olshansky next year. Not flashy, but a lunchpail 3-4 DE.
110. K.J. Wright LB Mississippi State
Wright is a guy that can play inside or outside, but I think he may be moved to ILB and become Bradies' heir apparent. Has zero durability issues and can get to the passer. So, if the ILB experiment fails he can still be a spot relief for Spencer and Ware.
143. Stephen Burton WR West Texas A&M
Is the small school gamble. Will need help to develop ability to gain separation, but I think our new WR coach can help him become a #3 WR. Very good size and measureables. Can return kicks.
176. Byron Bell OT New Mexico
A project for Houck and Phillips. A strong big bodied OT who could develop into a good swing tackle or backup OG.
220. Mario Fannin RB Auburn
A hybrid RB who is 5-11 230. Can step in for Barber or Choice and be a good ST'er and possibly a return man. Wasn't used much at Auburn, but has extremely good measureables to make him worth developing.
252. DeJon Gomes S Nebraska
It was either a kicker or developmental S here. The last 3 rounds are a crapshoot anyways..
