Playing for the Cowboys actually hurts you on these type of lists for some reason.

If Romo, Witten, or Dez played for the Cardinals they would all be on this list.

Maybe for NFLN top 100-- I agree. But PFF top 101 is a list based on their own grading.

It’s not very subjective; rather it grades players on the result of their performances.

It’s far from perfect and I don’t think you can use it to create a ranking system of the best players, but opinion has very little to do with their list.

Total joke and obvious atttempt to get the non-senical artical noticed.

Bryant left off because of a percieved few bad games, meanwhile DeSean Jackson 89th with games where he was held under thirty yards on four occasions and disappeared in the playoff game against the Saints.

How in god's green earth is Evan Mathis the seventh best player in football?

This is yet another reason I cringe when some of you guys are always referring to PFF.

They are garbage.

If I was Dez, I wouldn't create a list putting 100 guys in order either.

Evan Mathis is the 7th best player in football.

Got it.

And how Trent Cole made the list over other defenders is hilarious. Philly drafted Smith to basically take Cole's spot. LOL.

Trent Cole????? 'nuff said.....

I kinda get teh feeling that some stuffy pencil pusher type(maybe on a high horse) is always gonna see Dez a certain way regardless of how good he is. I apply the same measuring stick to all players: Can you win with him? If the answer is yeas then he's in the top 53 on my list.

They downgraded Dez because according to their stats he led all Top 25 receivers in drops AND fumbles.

Remember a few years ago the media was saying that Dez should learn to act like Justin Blackmon of the Jags. Dez was the bad guy because he yelled in a Mall. Pffft

These lists... smh

I'm trying to pin point at what point these lists became a part of the offseason, I guess it was when NFL debut their Top 100 list just so they'd have some content to blab about when there was nothing else going on. It wasn't always this way.

Doesn't matter if he is ranked top 100. When his contract comes up his pay will be top 5 for receivers.

More importantly Romo and Witten left off. Murray makes it at 76 and Smith at 44

Hey, Mr. 2,00--yards doesn't half the resume yet. So what?
He has been pedestrian with flashes of greatness but so far he's no Megatron or even close to it.

But . . . what? Murray makes it but not Romo and Witten and Dez.
Makes me wonder about how the list was compiled. probably by impluse.

And this is an example of why nobody should ever use PFF stats as any kind of evidence in an argument. Made up measurements simply do not work

I won't defend PFF's methodology or the really stupid idea of using their numbers to compare across positions, but...

Dez simply didn't have an elite-receiver year last year. His catch percentage was too low (58%), his ypc was too low (13.3) and he fumbled too often. He was much more productive in 2012. As I've said before, it wasn't all his fault, but we're talking about his 2013 production here, not his talent or ability or ceiling.

He was great in the red zone. You can't take that away from him. But apart from that, his numbers were what they were primarily because of the sheer volume of passes thrown his way.

Someone mentioned Keenan Allen. He had 22 fewer catches than Dez, but 56 fewer passes thrown his way (his catch rate was a tremendous 68%). And his ypc was a yard and a half better, 14.73 to Dez's 13.26. Plus, he scored TDs at essentially the same rate (per pass thrown to him) as Dez. So yeah, he did have a better season. Less volume, but he did a lot more with what came his way, and a lot fewer passes ended up on the ground.

I for one hope we see the Romo/Dez combination of 2012 out there this year, not the 2013 version.

Looking at the PFF premium stats for Dez, here is my best guess on why they've given Dez the 22nd best WR grade for 2013 and why he didn't make the Top 101 players in rated for 2013:
  • His catch %59.6 catch percentage for passes attempted to him (they have him down for 93 catches on 156 attempts) was ranked 61st out of all NFL WRs graded
  • Dez received a negative grade of -2.5 for his blocking. That was the 103rd for all graded WRs
  • Dez had the 2nd most dropped passes for any WR graded in the top 25. On Brandon Marshall had more.
  • Dez was tied for the most fumbles (3) of any WR graded in the top 25. He tied Alshon Jeffrey for the most.
  • He was just average in terms of penalties called for WRs graded in the top 25.
In summary, Dez had very high ranked grades for individual things like yards, TDs, RAC, etc -- right there with the top guys ranked like Brandon Marshall, Jordy Nelson, and Calvin Johnson -- however PFF viewed his drops, his fumbles, his poor run blocking, and the low completion percentage in passes thrown to him as big negatives and that it what drop his ranking to 22 for all WRs.

2nd most TDs (13) from WRs in the league.
8th in receptions
13th in yards

Give me a break

And the other stats--especially the deference between 2 and 3 fumbles making this huge difference--is a joke. And yes, blocking is important. But far less so for you primary WR target. I'm glad Harris blocks well...that adds value. But if Dez gets a -2.5 in blocking, that should effect his rating by .00001%.
When really silly stuff starts getting factored in more than it should, it shows gaping holes in the overall football savvy of those observing the player.
