Campbell
Washington Commanders quarterback Jason Campbell is one of the classiest players I've dealt with in the league, and that's why it's not surprising to see him taking the high road on the team's failed attempt to trade for Jay Cutler. He has every right to question his role on the team right now, but you won't hear any pouting out of him. It's too bad the Commanders were desperately attempting to trade Campbell for a quarterback who eventually whined his way out of Denver.
Campbell spent some time in head coach Jim Zorn's office this afternoon. It sounds like Zorn offered some reassuring words.
"That meant a lot to me," Campbell said, "to know that he's behind me and he's been behind me all along. You need to have that trust with your head coach because he's the one I'm going to be dealing with most of the time. I know that the coaches and my teammates are behind me. I trust them. That means a lot to me."
Campbell ackowledged his disappointment that the Commanders were attempting to trade him but added, "you can't let that get to you. You really just have to understand what it is. That's the business side of it and you have to go do your job still."
I think the Commanders ended up with right quarterback. It's too bad they don't feel the same way. Dan Snyder and Vinny Cerrato will spend the rest of the offseason wiping the egg off their faces.
Washington, we have a problem

It's official. Jay Cutler will be a Chicago Bear. The Washington Commanders took a mighty swing at Cutler -- and missed. Now they will deal with the fallout of letting their franchise quarterback Jason Campbell know that he's expendable. Of course, Campbell was already heading into the final year of his contract. But what happened Thursday is a completely different story.
Maybe we'll know soon how close the Commanders came to landing Cutler, but right now, it doesn't matter. They're in the same boat the Broncos were in late February with Cutler.
I don't think Commanders fans will give Dan Snyder and Vinny Cerrato much of a break over missing out on this deal. If you were wondering what the worst-case scenario was for the Commanders today, you're now staring at it.
