Cornerbacks Marcus Trufant of the Seahawks and Nnamdi Asomugha of the Raiders have to be happy about the recent contracts given to Nate Clements of the 49ers and Quentin Jammer of the Chargers. The franchise numbers came out this week, and cornerbacks lead the way with a one-year tender of $9.465 million. If the Seahawks and Raiders can't work out deals in the next month, they would have to offer those cornerbacks $9.465 million in guarantees. Here are the rest of the positions for franchise numbers -- defensive ends $8.879 million, defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth $6.363 million, linebacker $8.065 million, offensive line $7.455 million, kickers $2.541 million, quarterbacks $10.73 million, running backs $6.538 million, safeties $4.396 million, tight end $4.522 million and wide receivers $7.848 million.

These are the transition numbers: cornerbacks $7.659 million, defensive end $7.679 million, defensive tackle $5.654 million, linebacker $7.335 milllion, offensive line $6.895 million, kicker $2.245 milllion, quarterback $9.5 milllion, running back $5.699 million, safety $3.893 million, tight end $3.733 million and wide receiver $6.872 million.

Three-way Skins race: It's starting to look as though Commanders owner Dan Snyder may wait until after the Super Bowl to hire a head coach. The three finalists for the job currently are former Giants coach Jim Fassel, Commanders defensive coordinator Gregg Williams and Colts defensive coordinator Ron Meeks. If a decision is made this week, Fassel appears to have the edge. The fact Snyder didn't hire Williams in the first two weeks is a sign he's questioning whether he is the right fit. If the search does go past the Super Bowl, then it's possible Snyder might interview Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo after the Super Bowl, slightly expanding the search.

Second time around: How did Fassel slip into the Commanders search? Four years ago, Fassel was going to be the Commanders head coach. Snyder had him one phone call away from making him the offer. But one of the minority owners convinced Snyder to take one more run at convincing Joe Gibbs to take the job. Four years later, Fassel is getting a second chance.

Next in line: The hiring of Mike Smith in Atlanta probably didn't generate much excitement but the guy is a good football coach. He probably did the best job of calling first- and second-down run blitzes to cover for some problems along the Jaguars defensive line. One of the names being mentioned for his offensive coordinator is former Jaguars offensive coordinator Carl Smith.

Heir apparent? Now that Mike Holmgren has made his decision to stay with the Seahawks for the final season, expect the organization to work out a contract for Jim Mora to be the next coach of the team. Don't be surprised if a deal is done as early as next week. Mora is the logical successor and the team will actively try to take care of that situation as soon as they get back from the Senior Bowl.

Solari knows the score: The Seahawks hiring of offensive line coach Mike Solari will take some pressure off the Seahawks in free agency. The Seahawks needed to do one of two things to improve their running offensive and their blocking in general. They needed to upgrade the coaching of the line or look to sign Steelers guard Alan Faneca. Solari was a great addition. He knows the West Coast offense and has coached some of the best offensive lines in football.

We gotta take care of Newman soon and it will cost. We'll also see how much it takes to re-sign Hamlin. Sure would like to see us sign FA like Berriman or trade for Roy Williams; don't see any chance we can get Fitz from Cards. Don't see that happening if we pay to keep Adams; franchising him will take about $8M. Big decision and Jerry will sure look to Houck re his assessment of Adams at this time in his career and also whether Free has ability to start/play very well at LT. We gotta add a quality WR one way or another who can contribute immediately. I do feel the play of our offense suffered near the end partly to other teams taking TO out of the game, lack of speed from Crayton/Hurd & Austin needs step it up this year.

It is RIDICULOUS what these players are making nowadays. It is also RIDICULOUS what owners and the NFL and cable companies are making.

NFL Fans foot the bill for all of this and we continue to pay RIDICULOUS prices for jerseys, hats, tickets, parking spaces, access to NFL games on TV, etc...

When will enough be enough? It's too bad there is no way for fans to join together and affect some change in the seemingly unbridled world of sports entertainment.

Those are franchise numbers and as we know a contract would not reflect that much cap number in a single year until the end of the contract.

Although Nate Clements contract is for $81 million, if you look at the contract terms, the cap hit for the first 4 years is very managable. I believe his bonus (guarantees) was around $22 million spread over 8 years. His cap number is only around $5 million a year until the 5th year, that isn't bad.

Florence contract will not be that high although Asmugha, Trufant and Samuels may be. Jammer's cap number with San Diego is going to be around $4 million a year the first 4 years.

They said linemen but they need to break it out because LT is higher than a guard when it comes to franchising them

Offensive linemen are all the same when it comes to franchise amounts. They don't break it into tackles, guards and centers.

Also, the cost for us to franchise Adams is $8.4 million, not the franchise tender amount. That's 120 percent of his 2007 "salary" (not base salary, rather his cap number minus a few things).

I was wondering since Nate clements got that big 8yr 80mil contract do you think any free agent corner in the next couple years will get more per yr or do you think theres no chance?

Yea, that is too much money for a DB. I have a strange feeling that all of these players do not recieve these deals and sit out.

I posted how Dallas should Franchise he Hotel early in order to pressure him into a reasonable contract.

Yet, many of the forum captoligists stated it would be too much, since the cap would be about 10 million for OL.

Maybe homework should be done before shooting your mouth off?

I don't know what a captologist is, but I assume the people you're referring to were basing it off of last year's numbers. Obviously it changes from year to year, but it's not wholly unreasonable to assume it'll be relatively close to the previous year's number.

A captologist is someone that sizes the baseball caps that the players wear!

Well making assumptions and then talking like you know what your talking about is my point.

People should judge others opinion based on wrong assumptions.

BTW, It was meant to sound goofy.

I can imagine some of the types described above giving themselves such a title.

If Adams gets any Tag it is going to be the transition tag. But that is still a pretty big number.
