ESPN Continues to Think Mike Shanahan Will End Up in Dallas

A couple days ago ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported that the Cowboys could be in the Mike Shanahan business. If not this offseason, then a year from now, when Jerry Jones will announce that he can no longer stand the sight of Wade Phillips in his puffy coat.

Last spring, the job was Jason Garrett's to lose and, well, that sounds like what he's done. Despite T.O., Witten, Williams, Barber, Romo et al, the Cowboys' offense was inconsistent and often out-schemed. And that let to ESPN's Mike & Mike having the following conversation during this morning's radio show (via DMN's Sports Media Blog):
Mike: "To me the biggest surprise and I don't mean this critically...that after the way their season ended Wade Phillips is the coach of the Cowboys."

Other Mike: "...I also thought that Jason Garrett was the heir apparent yet he was given permission to talk to the Detroit Lions. You know to give your heir apparent permission to talk to another team..."

Interrupted by Mike: "I can tell you who the heir apparent is in Dallas, it's Mike Shanahan. Mike Shanahan will be the coach of the Cowboys a year from now if not sooner."
Now, I have no idea if Jones wants Shanahan for 2009 or beyond, but one of the Mikes make an interesting point: for all the trouble Jerry went through to keep Garrett in Dallas, you'd think he'd do everything in his power to keep him around. Of course, maybe Jones thinks that there's no way Garrett takes the Lions job; it's where once-promising careers go to die, after all.

Whatever, with all the potential big names looking for work in a year's time -- Shanahan, Bill Cowher, Mike Holmgren -- Phillips will probably need to win the Super Bowl to keep his job. And I'm not even sure if that'll be enough.

If he winds up here I can't see it happening anytime before the 2010 offseason.

What's it going to be then, eh?

One way or the other, I believe it is likely. Maybe not as immediate as necessary, but it could happen.

We all know JG is staying put because that is what his wife said so.

Jerry has nothing to fear about him leaving.

I'd rather have Rex Ryan

Like he never interviewed before and got the job? THere is a reason some guys are better co-ordinators than HC. I thik Rex will end up being that. I.e. better Co-ordinator than a HC. Just like Jim Johnson and Monty Kiffin.

Schefter's blog on NFL. com said No...for this year.

Just as many questioned Bill Cowher’s intentions, they have done the same with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who has insisted Wade Phillips will return as his coach next season.

Now there is yet another signal, maybe the strongest to date. Despite contemplating it, the Cowboys will not make a run at former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan, at least not this season, according to a Cowboys source.

A run at Shanahan near or at the end of next season for the Cowboys still is entirely possible. Jones and Shanahan know each other from the time the Broncos and Cowboys have scrimmaged against each other the past two summers. Shanahan attended Eastern Illinois, the alma mater of Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo. And when the Broncos fired coach Wade Phillips after the 1994 season, they replaced him with Shanahan.

But Shanahan to Dallas will have to wait for now, according to the Cowboys. Still, as long as the Cowboys struggle with Phillips as their coach, and as long as Shanahan remains on the sideline, there will be calls in and around Dallas for Jones to make his move. After next season, he still might. But he will not do it this season. If Shanahan coaches in 2009, which is looking more unlikely, it will not be in Dallas.

This definitely needs to wait. Sure don't want to mess with that continuity and team chemistry we have going on now.

Good call, Jerry.

I'd rather give him a shot than some other 60 year old coach who won't be coaching for much longer. Jerry has the right idea about keeping the coaching staff in place but the problem is is that it's not a good coaching staff.

So basically we are going to waste a year and then hire the guy we could get now. Great plan Jerry.

1. They have to keep talking about the Cowboys because of ratings/readers.
2. There isn't much else to talk about.

And somewhere in Dallas Jerry sits back and smiles since his Cowboys are in the news again.

It will never happen but wouldn't it be nice if ticket buyers and TV viewers said "Okay Jerry, we'll see you in 2010. No money from us this year."

But just think how exciting it will be this time next year after we suffer through a 7-9 (or worse) season and have Shanny coming on board with a top 10 pick to boot!!

After all it's only a year of everyone's life. :)

If Garrett leaves, I wonder if there's any chance that Shanahan would take the OC job with thoughts of being the HC next year.

Exactly. And some say Jerry's not a genius.

We have no idea what's going to happen. Although there's nothing wrong with discussing anything and everything, it's not so simple as Jerry and Wade are stupid. Jerry owns the most prestigious (at the present time at least) and while I'm betting he got lucky a lot he's gotten where he is by being very smart.

We just don't know enough. I'd so love to be a fly on the wall there.

Has Jerry talked with Shanahan?
