Could Ronald Leary bring Cowboys a backup quarterback?

IRVING, Texas -- The homestretch to the NFL draft is here now that the Senior Bowl, scouting combine and owners meetings are done.

The Dallas Cowboys have kept seven of their own free agents, including starting-type players like Rolando McClain, Morris Claiborne and James Hanna. But they haven’t filled enough of their holes on the defensive line and at backup quarterback.

Let’s get started with Five Wonders with that backup spot.

  • Colt McCoy orChase Daniel. They had Matt Moore in for a look but he opted to remain with the Miami Dolphins. At the owners meetings last week, executive vice president Stephen Jones also mentioned the possibility of a trade. It got me to wondering if the Cowboys could use Ronald Leary as trade bait for a backup quarterback. I’m not advocating getting rid of Leary, who I believe could start for most teams in the NFL, but the Cowboys have cast their lot with La’el Collins at left guard. The Cowboys gave Leary the second-round tender worth $2.553 million as a restricted free agent, but they can negotiate deals with teams. Leary should be of interest to teams, but teams generally don’t want to give up picks at this time of the year. In 2010 the Cowboys traded Anthony Henry for Jon Kitna to solve their backup problem. Could Leary bring a backup quarterback in 2016?

I would hate to lose Leary. It seems to me that the position he is in with the Cowboys is the best he can be in. His knee is not good for the regular wear and tear that a starting Guard would put on for a whole season. I think him being in a backup role suits him perfectly. He has got to be near the best backup guard in the NFL. And if it wasn't for that knee he would be worth a quit a bit. Its hard to judge the value of a backup QB compared to Leary. I would want a young guy with potential maybe a Brett Hundley?? But I still dont know If I would make that deal. Its tough

I would make it in a heart beat and still draft a QB at 4.

Everybody always brings up his knee, but I don't recall him missing any games from it. In know it's supposed to be a degenerative condition that could come at anytime, but it may not ever give him trouble.

More like, could Ron Leary, the No. 4 pick, and a 4th-round pick get you to No. 1 to pick the QB they fancy.

I think we should prepare ourselves for that.

I think Lynch is their top qb anyway.

I think the Cowboys like Lynch best, your opinion doesn't exactly win me over on that opinion.

Coaching at the Senior Bowl allowed our coaches and scouts to fall in love with Wentz. I suspect he is a notch higher on the preference list.

I would rather trade Leary for a second round pick and use that pick and our own to move back into the first round and get a QB, if they get stupid and pick Bosa or Ramsey with the 4th pick.

Dexter Coakley and a 4th rounder for the No. 1 pick in the draft !!!
